SMCARA Hams,
I made a trek to Point Lookout state park August 27th to enjoy the weather
and, out of curiosity, see how well the 147.39 repeater covers the southern
end of Saint Mary's county.
My mobile station is an ICOM ID-5100 with a quarter wave (unity gain) NMO
antenna mounted on the center of the cab.
I had 100% full quieting coverage from Lexington Park, through Park Hall,
Saint Mary's city (including the low area near the college) and Ridge.
There is a 100% dead spot starting in the area of the 'guard' shack entrance
to the park and ending on the other side of the water break causeway (where
everyone fishes).
Mobile coverage is restored to ~ 80% on the other side of the causeway and
all the way to the very end near the light house.
I got out of my vehicle to test Hand Held (/\/\otorola Saber) coverage at
the lighthouse. I could occasionally hear the repeater using the Hand Held
in this area
but I couldn't access the repeater and I couldn't be heard. Heading back
towards the causeway, I could occasionally access the repeater using the HT,
but it was very intermittent.
Very impressive results! I don't know how far it reaches into the Northern
portions of Saint Mary's and beyond, that's a test for another day.
