Hi Cal,

Technology is cool! Besides, it is fun to make these things work.

However (of course there is always a "however"!), I think this points up a need for a club meeting presentation on the various digital modes that are sprouting up.
I think the general population needs to know a few things:

1 What new equipment is needed to use the system/mode?
2. What is the advantage of this mode over the other 27 competing modes ((-: ?
3. Are the modes compatible? What happens when 5 guys show up for an event and one has fusion, one has Dstar, one has P25, one has Klumnik 17 (OK, I made that one up!)...is
there an ESCAPE function that lets them all fall back to plain vanilla FM so they can talk to each other?
4. What features does this mode bring to the communications arena? See question #2.
5. Do the nodes (either same mode or different) talk to each other via internet? Or do you have to pick up a different HT or microphonium to talk to Larry, Wes or whoever?
5. Where does "Joe Ham" go to find out how to use the new mode and how to navigate the maze of talk groups, reflectors, and other seemingly endless tunnels?

If anyone builds a radio that embraces all these digital mode, it will be a killer in the marketplace!

I've got a new YAESU Wires-X Node (#18049) up and running from the Home QTH (Lexington Park) on 146.55 Simplex.

The node is open to all so feel free to try out another mode. It's currently running in the Digital Mode (DN) Fusion C4FM.

The Node is linked to the internet and the radio is a FTM-100DE running 20
watts into a Diamond X50a @ 35 Feet.

Initial tests are very good. Larry, N3JTN, has been able to use the node
from 12 miles away. Feel free to contact me if there are any questions!
