I like all the comments, but I thought I'd put my two cents in. I joined the club to associate with people who actually worked amateur radio. I moved back to the area in 2011, but was not at all active in the hobby. I owned two HTs I acquired in 2003 when I got licensed. I was not affiliated with a club then and therefore did not flourish in the hobby.
I had to make a decision in 2013 at the 10 year renewal mark. Do I let it die, or do I renew.
Thankfully, I knew Dan Metcalf from church and I found out about the club. I attended a couple of meetings and was impressed by the quality of the club members and that fact that many had deep technical understanding of radio communications. I attended the upgrade class in the summer of 2013, learned that there was way more to being a licensed operator than passing a test.
I bought my first HF transceiver two months after the class and my first mobile radio. I got introduced to DSTAR and got hooked. I appreciate being a member of SMCARA, because of the vast talent of club membership, building projects, education through licensing classes, seminars and associating with club members.
May I mention that I participated in the antenna build project of the OCF dipole and potato gun? Within two weeks of getting my HF rig on the air using the items mentioned I worked Australia! I've since participated in HF contesting, getting certificates for special events, building DSTAR hotspots, working two years of Field Day, and participating in community events providing HAM radio ops, and last but not least worked DX with digital modes on HF.
In the 10 years prior to 2013, I only knew about VHF/UHF repeaters and IRLP. Since joining the club two years ago, I've become a HAM radio enthusiast.
