Here's a thought, since you are a serious contester and all around operator. Consider the new K3S. It is a bit above your price point, but you can do it incrementally. Sherwood puts it at the top of their list, 2nd only to the Flex 6700 by 1 dB in dynamic range, although the noise floor in the K3 is lower than the 6700. Close enough to be a tie for these old ears!
The new rig has an improved synthesizer with lower noise, as well as improved audio I/O (harsh sounding receive audio has been a complaint by K-3 owners). I think they have added a built in sound card as well.
When I purchased mine,, I started with the basic K-3 10 watt version in kit form. I then added the 100 watt PA, more filters, and finally the built-in auto tuner. This is a no solder kit, as everything plugs together and you basically do the mechanical assembly. I was amazed that all the screw holes, etc., lined up perfectly! You could eventually add the 2nd receiver (an exact duplicate of the main Rx-not a "imitation rx" like some rigs), VHF transverter, Panadapter, and the 500 watts SS linear. Now you're up into the 5-6K range!
Happy K-3 user at this end.

Hello fellow radio guys. I need your advise. I'm thinking about selling my TS-590S and getting a TS-590SG. My questions are: How much better is the SG over the S, and what should I ask for the S?
Is there another rig in the $1,600 to $1,800 range I should consider other than the 590SG? Tom Shelton, ND3N240-434-3811 If it ain't broke, let's fix it until it is...
