A review of Motorola situation as I know it:
-Motorola fiercely protects their software rights and licensing. That is
why you will not see adverts or trading of their programming software
among hams. They DO prosecute.
-It is possible to go through the registration process at their website,
but they price their software for commercial users. Last I got
interested in Motorola gear, I found the software alone was upwards of
$400, not including any other fees, equipment, etc.
-Again, last I knew, programming software would only run on a native DOS
machine, i.e. true Intel 386 or (possibly) 486 processor.
*Yes, Motorola is out to make every dollar they can and make it
difficult for anybody to encroach on their empire*
-Check for availablity and cost of programming before buying any Moto
equipment. Nothing worse than getting stuck with hundreds of dollars of
(great) equipment, with no way of programming.
-Best bet is what you are doing here. Find a kind soul with software,
cables who will help you out. Some Two-way radio shops sometimes offer
price discounts to hams for programming. Others don't want to be
bothered at all. Unfortunately cell phones have greatly reduced the
number of radio shops.
Good luck! Moto makes great gear, and it can be surprising to discover
the difference in signal quality between commercial and wide/multiband
ham gear. bill, KB4QAA
