Great story, Gene! Agree wholeheartedly with your comment: " WHAT A TIME TO BE AN AMERICAN!"
I wouldn't trade a minute of it.

I joined the Naval Reserve in 1962 (to avoid ARMY ROTC!) in college, and then:
USNR Sub School, New London CT.
USS Tench (SS-417) during active duty as QM3.
Officer Candidate School, Newport RI.
Mine Squadron TEN, Charleston SC (Minesweeping boats).
USS Limpkin (MSC-195) (Coastal Minesweeper, Charleston SC.
Air Training Command, Pensacola FL and Corpus Christi TX (Wings of Gold).
VP-18, Roosevelt Roads PR. (SP-2H Neptune ASW aircraft).
VP-24, Pax River, MD (P-3 Orion ASW).
VP-30, Pax River, MD (P-3 Instructor pilot).
Fleet Air Keflavik/NATO Staff, Keflavik Iceland (CO of Flag Admin Unit and TSC Director).
VP-45, Jax FL. (P-3 Orion, Maintenance Officer).
VR-24 Det, Rota, Spain (C-130, Executive Officer).
VX-20, Pax River, MD (P-3/C130/UC12, Operations Officer).
Retired and stayed at VX-20 as OPS and P-3/C130/CV880 Pilot.
Finally hung up the spurs in 2006, with a little over 14,000 hours in the logbook.
Fly a desk now.

It's been fun!
Only got shot at once (Beirut, 1982), and they missed! Except for the "Cold War", that was my only "combat".
Also, all my landings and takeoffs are equal!

Tom/W4OKW, ex K1AST, WA4DGM, VP2MTC, and EA7BXP

I was in the Navy twice, but never saw combat ... first time was as a 19/20-year old on the "Mighty Mo" (BB 63, battleship) on which the Surrender had been signed ending WW II, but I had missed the War. We were the first Task Force to return to England after the war, AND WHAT A TIME TO BE AN AMERICAN! Everywhere we went ashore on liberty, people, simply stopped us on the street, and thanked us. For me, it was embarrassing. I would tell them I had not been in the war. --- "That's OK, Yank, thank you." ... They were still under rationing. Yet, no where could we pay for meals, or even buy tickets to the theater. For American Servicemen, everything was "no-pay... free" WHAT A TIME TO BE AN AMERICAN!
The second time was the Korean War, but I was in the Atlantic Fleet!
... Ain't that life? Thank God ---
