I wouldn't trust it - the recommended charger has a step-down transformer in
line (http://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-008351) - most HT's these
days use lithium-ion batteries and they are very sensitive (read "can
explode") if not charged properly.  Spend the extra and get the OEM car
charger.
