The tape measure yagi would be better than an omni-directional antenna, but from what I've been reading, you really want something better. I'm thinking I might build a 6 or 7 element cross-yagi like this:

It's going to take some planning and will probably take several people to make the contact since your trying to contact the ISS as it passes across the sky. So, it will probably take a couple people to continuously aim the antenna while someone operates the radio.

O have a tape measure that we made at field day. Will that work? I'd love to make an ISS contact! !!

Subject: [SMCARA] ISS contact?
I found out yesterday that I know someone who is now an astronaut and will be going to the International Space Station at the end of the month (Reid Wiseman, KF5LKT, he was a test pilot at Pax). Has anyone made contact with the ISS and/or want to help me try? Anyone have a 2m circular polarized directional antenna I can borrow for a while? Or maybe seen some DIY plans for one?
