The club has a PK-232MBX that is mounted in a rack panel just like the current LDG tuner for the station. This will do Packet/RTTY/PACTOR/AMTOR/ASCII/FAX, but not the newer sound card modes such as PSK/JT/WSPR/Hell/Throb/etc. It works well for VHF packet such as the WinLink stuff or APRS. It does not use the sound card and interfaces via a serial port (not a USB, but traditional 9 pin serial) to the computer and via audio cables to the HF or VHF radio. We could set it up on VHF for WinLInk.
I think the SL-USB is the way to go for HF modes. Much more flexibility. I may have a SLUSB to IC-746 cable in my "junque" box. We can eventually mount a SLUSB on a rack panel for convenience.
Go for it!

I have a Signalink USB that I can spare to be used at the club station. I have a dual core win 7 laptop that can be used during setup and during the contest. not sure what cable would be needed. I have the 6-pin mini-din connectors used on most ICOM and YAESU rigs.
