Good for you Allen! That's what Ham Radio is all about! Have fun every day as my pal W3FF says. I ran QRP with my FT-817 down in St Lucia last year and it was a blast. The J6 callsign probably added 10 db to my signal!
While not exactly QRP, I did have some fun on 10 last weekend. I heard a carrier come up on 29.0 AM and it turned out to be a 0 out in Colorado calling CQ. 58 to 59 signal.
Just for fun I grabbed the mic and gave him a call and he came back with a 58, good audio. OK, now I know that the K-3 works on AM!
We chatted a bit and found a few similarities. He likes boatanchor stuff too, he was working me on a Johnson Ranger and a Collins 75A1 receiver. The Ranger puts out about 40-50 watts plate modulated AM and my K-3 was pumping out about 50 watts of synthetic AM. I have that setup also, but it's in the attic at the moment. He is a retired Air Force Pilot (F-100s F-4s) and I am a retired Naval Aviator. He got his ticket in 1954, I got mine in 1956.
AM QSOs are fun and not your typical "59, good luck in the contest" sort of thing! The ARRL used to offer a "Rag Chewers" certificate for having at least a 30 minute QSO with someone. I wonder if they still do that?

Hi all,
I have been operating QRP PSK-31/63 lately and wanted to give you the
statistics of the fun that I have had in the last month or so. Here's the
rundown on the shack, IC-7000 at 1-5W, G5RV at 30ft at the center.
The first numbers are the distance in miles, then the location, and unless
otherwise noted, all contacts are made with 5W. 2618-Azores 1048-OK-already
got card!
501-KY
569-GA
896-MO
1516-Puerto Rico
724-FL
2028-Venezuela
2292-Venezuela
1127-FL
1127-LA
4095-Germany-3W
1393-Dominican Rep.
513-GA
3689-Spain
1923-Mexico-2W
1127-MO
27186 total miles on 80 watts ranging from 2 to 5 watts, not including
system losses.
339.8 average distance per watt
1599.2 average contact distance
shortest distance contacted, 501 miles equals 100.2 per watt farthest
contact 4095 miles at 3 watt, equals 1365 miles per watt
The reason that I did QRP was that I always run 50W normally and wanted
to see just how little power I really need. Just shows you that you can have
fun and not fry the other guy's receiver! Many times when I answered a CQ
the op would say that I had a nice line and 100% copy.
Allen,
