Personally,  I prefer an old fashioned paper QSL card (if you have them) to document their first contact. YMMV.

service.  It seems that you do not have to be a member but if you are some
new ham's "first contact" (awww) you can go here
www(dot)arrl(dor)org(FS)first-contact fill in the blanks and that person
can get a nifty certificate from the ARRL commemorating it.  So if you have
the honor of doing that, might make a souvenir thingie for someone.
