Hello all. I'm saving up some money for a portable HF radio and ive pretty well decided on either the 817 or the 857. I'm leaning toward the 817 simply because of the compactness and versatility of power supplies, and I am also very interested in doing QRP operations (which either radio will primarily be used for). I like the 857 because it can do 100w, but it is fairly larger and heavier, and a heavy external battery is required. I found this bag for the 817 http://stores.amp-3.net/yaesu-817-radio-bag-black/ which I think is awesome and would make simply grabbing the bag and leaving a lot easier.
The antenna I will be using is a Par Endfedz 10/20/40m endfed antenna http://www.lnrprecision.com/endfedz/
I do understand the 857 can always be turned down to 5w, but if I will only be using the radio on 5w, why spend the extra $200 for the 857 compared to the 817?
All opinions and suggestions will be appreciated.
