How to use CW(KY CMD) with HRD/DM780 with Kenwood Radios
Note: This will also work with Elecraft K2 & K3 radios
You don’t need a keyer or soundcard interface to transmit CW
– you will need a soundcard interface (computer, SignaLink, built-in, other) to
receive and decode the CW. I've tested this with Kenwood TS-440S, TS-2000 (both using SignaLinks for receive), and TS-590, using the rig's built-in soundcard.
1) Turn on your radios and start up Ham Radio
Deluxe – make sure your radio is in CW mode and that your VOX is turned on.
2) On the DM-780 screen, select the Modes button –
this will bring up the Modes Manager pop-up window.
3) Under “Buttons (by mode)” Select the box next to
CW (KY Cmd)
4) Close the Modes Manager window – you should now
see “CW (KY Cmd)” as a selectable mode – click on that button to select it.
5) Make a macro with your callsign in it
a. Title: Your Callsign
b. Toolbar Title: Your Callsign
c. Group: CQ
d. Definition: <my:callsign> <erase>
<stop>
i. This will send the callsign that you have
entered in your “Tabs”, then will erase the transmit window and stop the macro,
which sets your rig back to receive.
e. Select the following: Enable, Send immediately,
Start on new line.
f. Under “Enable by Mode” make sure that CW is
selected.
6) Open your “Options window” and select “Waterfall”
7) Select “Enable Center Frequency Marker” and
enter “800” in one of the offset frequencies immediately below the Center
Marker selection. This is the normal
sidetone frequency for Kenwoods – check your owner’s manual and menus for more
info.
8) Close the Options window.
9) Click on your callsign – your radio should
transmit your callsign in Morse Code.
Extras
1) Use the Radio Control “Configure” button to add
a Keyer Speed slider so you can adjust your speed.
2) Add additional Macro’s for station report, stations
equipment, contest exchanges, good-byes, etc. Just be sure to always end them with “<erase> <stop>”
