I have used this exact setup and the only time I feel it was a distraction
was when I was doing HF mobile and trying to log / tune / talk and drive at
the same time but that was me. As for getting in the way it is easy to
nudge the control head out of the way. As for the car it really helps to
make the installation look nice. The main part of the radio can be hidden
under a seat or in the trunk and the control head wires can be ran nicely
from the base up the post and connected to the control head.
I might have an extra one I can give you a deal on. I will check if you are
