Always remember "W4OKW's first Law of Antennas" - If it sounds stupid(or
impossible), but it works - it isn't stupid!

Working NJ from MD on 20 meters with an antenna laying on the ground,
adds a whole new dimension to the term "Ground Wave"!

Let's see, we have:

Windom Antennas, ( Loren Windom, W8GZ)
Zeppelin Antennas (developed for use on the Zeppelin, hence "end fed
Zepp)
G5RV Antennas (Louis Varney, G5RV)
Yagi-Uda Antennas (developed by Hidetsugu Yagi and Shintaro Uda at the
Tohoku Imperial Univ in Japan)
Beverage Antennas (Harold Beverage,)
Alford Loop (Andrew Alford) Used in navigation systems such as ILS
Localizer.
Moxon Antenna (Joseph Moxon -not a ham, but a 17th century
mathematician)
Reber Radio Telescope Antenna (Grote Reber, W9GFZ) first use of
parabolic reflector for radio
Jansky Radio Telescope Antenna (Karl Jansky) basically an array of
loops.

Will there be a "Metcalf Array" someday?

Nicely done!

Tom/W4OKW

So I was on 20m with my dipole we it faded out. I then moved over to my
vertical not realizing that I had it laying on the ground (forecasted
storms). Having my vertical antenna in the horizontal position on
the ground I was able to (with ease) make a contact in NJ with K2RH. Too
Cool!

I am still amazed at what works when it shouldn't.

Amateur Radio has something for everyone. Even if it is just peace of
mind
that no matter what happens your message will get through.
