The CODE (spoken with a really deep voice and a lot of reverb to make it seem really scary) is not needed for any license class. However, there are a lot of hams still using it, sometimes exclusively. Every CW operator has their own reasons for using it. Personally I find the code to be very relaxing. When all the thoughts and stresses of the day are pressing down on me, focusing on CW requires all of my attention. I can’t think of anything except the dits and dahs and making a coherent conversation out of them. It doesn’t take very long for the stresses to leave and my mind to clear. During contests, CW is the great equalizer. In a phone contest, my low power station and vertical antenna limit me and it may take me 3 or 4 tries to be heard. With CW, I’m invariably heard on the 1st or 2nd try. As I said above, each ham has their own reasons for using CW.
I found a nifty web-site that will help you learn Morse Code, or if you already know it, will help increase your speed. And its all free.
If you’d just like to play with it a bit, use the username “test” with the password “test”
