[SMCARA] Finally a 2m rig makes into the Jeep

Congrats Dave!

The rig Looks nice. A roof mounted 5/8 wave will do wonders for your
range. I have a preference for Larsen antennas and find them well
built, efficient, although somewhat pricey. You get what you pay for
though, and they work well and last.

I have been using a thru-the-glass Larsen with success for the last 15
years or so. It has been on 3 different vehicles (there is a
reinstallation kit available). Some find that tinted windows upset the
antenna's performance, but that is not an issue on my Toy truck! I went
with the glass antenna as it has a bit lower profile. Less visual
impact and also whacks fewer trees! The antenna just bends over (it is
hinged at bottom), rather than flopping off the roof and banging the
side of the vehicle when you find a low hanging branch!

The theory behind this antenna is that it is a 1/2 wave antenna,
capacitively coupled at the bottom (hi Z point) through the glass. It
works for me, although I have found the 5/8 Wave antenna works a bit
better. (which makes sense as the theoretical gain is better for the 5/8
wave).

There are many mag mount 5/8 waves available or you could throw all
caution to the wind and punch a 3/4 inch hole in the roof and install a
Motorola NMO mount for either a Larsen 1/4 wave or 5/8 wave for a nice
clean installation.

I have not had a mag mount come off due to vehicle speed. Whatever that
speed is for the Larsen, my Toyota Vne (Velocity, never exceed) is less!
I got it to 90+ on my wife's Audi and it stayed on. Interstate 90 in
South Dakota is long and straight!

We'll be listening for you on the repeater soon, with a "full Quieting"
signal!

Well after to much time of only owning a HT I am finally getting around
to
adding an icom 2200h to my Jeep. Will be ordering an antenna soon.
