The November Sweepstakes, SSB, begins this afternoon at 4:00 PM Local (2100Z) and ends at 9:59PM Sunday evening (0259 Monday UTC). If you’d like to make a couple of contacts during the contest, here is how to do it.
The exchange is a bit complicated, but it consists of the following in a specific order:
1) The other stations call: For example – K6OX
2) A consecutive serial number: for example – 123
3) Your precedence: A is unassisted (no spotting network) and using 150 watts or less, B is unassisted and using more than 150 watts, Q is WRP at 5 watts or less, U is unlimited (using spotting network) regardless of power level, S is for a school club.
4) Your call sign: for example AB3IC
5) Your Check: the year you were first licensed: mine is 86
6) Your ARRL/CRL Section: For example “Maryland DC” or “MDC”
So, if I am working K6OX in California (Los Angeles Section) and it is their 12th contact and they are running unlimited, they would send: AB3IC 12U K6OX 55 LAX. I would reply with K6OX 123A AB3IC 86 Maryland DC.
If you are interested in actually operating the contest, the full rules can be found at: http://www.arrl.org/sweepstakes
For keeping your contest logs, an easy to set-up and use contest logging program is GenLog, which can be downloaded for free here: http://www.qsl.net/w3km/
If you catch the bug, and want to do more contesting, please contact me and ask about the Potomac Valley Radio Club, or go to www.pvrc.org.
As always, I’ll be happy to help you set-up for the contest and prepare your log file for submission... Just don’t call me during the contest – hi hi...
