[SMCARA] Marathon 03/11 update

Hey All,

I got started with HAM marathon support shortly after I got my ticket back
in 1986. I supported the L.A. Marathon for many years. As I lived about 75
miles from the race, it made for a very early rise and travel.

These races are really fun things. Aside from getting to ride my bike
really slow all morning long (hi hi), I find myself cheering for the
runners. Of course there is always the lead guy and gal, then there's the
big grouping, followed by the stragglers. It is these last folks that I
have the greatest appreciation for. They know they are in last place, they
know they might not even finish the race in the allotted time, but they keep
on pushing to obtain a personal goal. Many times, by the time these people
get to the water stations, they find that the volunteers supporting these
stations have moved on, usually (but not always) leaving some bottled water
and a couple of paper cups for them. I try to always carry extra water on
the bike for these folks. I also look into their eyes to see if they are in
any distress, but instead of weakness I invariably get a thumbs-up and see
their eyes filled with determination.

I know Ray has enough people to support the race, but there is always room
for more helpers. I encourage you to contact Ray ask to help.

The reward you get for this kind of thing (as I find with all public
service) is much more than a tee-shirt and a free lunch. Watching these
racers, at all levels, is inspirational and will give you a good feeling
that will last far beyond the end of the race.

Tom, AB3IC
