Indeed good work Larry! That was a, now well documented, Es opening.
I had a first myself last night. I worked KC3RE (about 100 miles away in
VA) on 144 SSB and CW. We could create a direct path (no SSB distortion and
T9 CW) or an aurora path (terribly distorted speech and T1 - T5 CW. The CW
sounded like spark at times (more a growl than a clean note)!
When working via the aurora path, all beam headings (+ /- 20 degrees of
North) worked equally well (no peak when panning).
When he went omni-directional (vs. beams to the north) and I "looked
directly at him", he was where he ought to be and had a clean signal peak.
Others worked AU last night too, so I'm convinced that's what we were
playing with.
