Aha! I thought that freq looked familiar! It's called "Hot Mic to
Chase" and allows the chase pilot as well as the folks in the TM control
room at Range to monitor what is going on in the test article . You get
to hear all the grunts and groans when he is pulling G's, as well as any
audio alerts from "B*tching Betty or warning tones/horns! They often
provide a running commentary during a test that is recorded. Otherwise
they would have to jot down a bunch of notes for debrief.
When I was flying tankers, we used to monitor hot mic in order to be one
step ahead and have the tanker close to the test article when he needed
gas. It is embarrassing to have the tanker (brevity code Texaco) up by
Lewes and the test pilot finish up his run down by Chincoteague, 100
miles away!
