1947; A classmate and I put together a radio communication system.
For oscillators, we employed old Model-T spark coils; no tubes;
Talk about broadband; we spanned the spectrum, exchanging early digital
dot-dash pulses over a block and a half distance between us.
There was no television to interfer with back then; and AM-radio was always
accompanied by some static. WLS, WBBM ,and WGN still got through. We did
keep our transmissions short.
Altough we thought about it; we stopped short of building a rhombic antenna
field.
We might have devastated the whole Northwest side of Chicago if we had.
We also tried a single wire, with ground return, telephone system the same
distance between us. using carbon granular mics and eletromagnet earphones.
We were never able to talk on it; but WLS came in loud and clear; no LCR
circuits, no tubes, not even a cat's whisker and crystal.
