 Steve,

The club has an Icom 725 HF transceiver available as a loaner. It is an oldie, but goodie and will get you on the air. It will make you appreciate the advances in the state of the art when you get your new radio, as it does not have all the bells and whistles, just a good radio. Let me know if you are interested and I will get it to you.

The last time I needed aluminum tubing, I was able to find some at Lowes. As I recall it is fairly soft thinwall and may not make a good mast for a large antenna. I used a piece of black iron pipe from Lowes for my GAP vertical and it is still standing! The iron stands up better if you are going to pound it into the ground (wait until after a rainstorm!). Using a threaded pipe cap will prevent "peening" the end and flattening it out so that it looks like a circus tent anchor post!

Questions like this usually initiate a flood of suggestions from other club members and their experience, so I am sure you will find a solution!

Subject: [SMCARA] New guy help!

As one of the new class of members, I’m trying to get on the air soonest.
I’ve got my antennas, power supply and tuner, but must wait about another 6
-8 weeks to order a new radio (my boat addiction just ripped me for 3k). So
if anyone has a radio just sitting on a shelf and wouldn’t mind parting with
it for a month or two, I’d be happy to work it for you.

On another note, trying to find a 2-3 foot length of 1 ¼ inch diameter
aluminum pipe for a mast is turning into a project by itself. Anyone know
where I can lay my hands on a short length? With no more TV’s around, you
can’t find the stuff.

Thanks
