Hello Folks,
Now that I have your undivided attention, here are a couple of quick
announcements:
- We will be holding our June meeting of the St. Mary's County Amateur
Radio Association (SMCARA) this coming Thursday evening, 25 June,
beginning at 7:30 PM in the conference room of the Naval Air Museum in
Lexington Park. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend. We have
several topics to discuss:
1) Due to the untimely passing of our long-time Treasurer, Garner
Hayden (W3SI), we need to have a special election to name a new
Treasurer for the club. If any of our members would like to step up
to the plate and volunteer for this critical position, that would be
a plus. I will be briefing the process for filling this position and
what actions need to be taken by a new incumbent. We will also need
to discuss what actions, if any, we need to take with reference to
the club post office box which Garner formerly maintained.
2) We would like to schedule a working party in the next month or so
to put up a short (30') Rohn tower behind the museum, topped with a
tri-band beam and rotator.
3) Please make plans NOW to attend and participate in our annual rite
of summer... the ARRL 'Field Day' operating event which will be held
this coming weekend, June 27-28. We will be holding our Field Day
once again at the rear of the parking lot at the Hollywood Volunteer
Fire Station, located just north of the traffic light/intersection of
Maryland Route 235 and 245 in Hollywood, Maryland.
Complete information about this event is posted on our club web site at
www.qsl.net/smcara on the Internet. We will be congregating at the site
on Saturday morning, 27 June, at 10 AM sharp to begin setup of the site
including erecting antennas, setting up the tables under the tent,
setting up the food station, setting up the public information table,
and setting up the generator, running the electric cables to the
operating tables, hooking up the lights for evening operations, and
other miscellaneous last minute tasks. It would be great to have
everyone help coordinate these various tasks so please come to the
meeting and volunteer to help ensure that each of the above tasks gets
done.
Field day operations begin at 2 PM sharp on Saturday afternoon and will
continue for as long as we can hold out! Normally, we try to go to
about 9 or 10 AM on Sunday and then we hope that everyone will converge
back on the site to assist in a rapid teardown and cleanup of the site.
Talk-in will be on the club repeater on 146.64 MHz and we will try to
monitor all of the other local repeaters plus 146.520 simplex.
One other request... we will be having our annual picnic at the Field
Day site on Saturday evening at 6 PM sharp. The club will be providing
the drinks, hamburgers/cheeseburgers, hot dogs, tomatoes and head
lettuce, condiments, and eating utensils. What we need is for everyone
attending to consider bringing a special dish they would like to share
with everyone else such as a salad (potato, macaroni, cole slaw, etc.);
baked beans, cookies, deserts, pies, etc. This has always been a big
part of Field Day each year and this year shouldn't be an exception. We
can finalize on Thursday at the meeting but please help us stage another
great field day.
See you at the meeting this Thursday at 7:30 PM.
Vr, Pete (WA3UMY)
President, St. Mary's County Amateur Radio Assn.
