Hi Folks,
Please take a moment to look at the e-mails (see below) regarding
support requested on 17 October to set up 2 or 3 simple ham stations to
demo ham radio to the scouts.
Is anyone interested in helping Kevin out per his request? Would you
have the time to perhaps be the coordinator of a small group that can
make this happen on that day?
This looks like a good opportunity to do some operating for the day in a
very public setting with the potential to get some scouts involved with
their first encounter with ham radio.
Let me know of your interest and we can provide a coordinated response
back to Kevin. Please e-mail me if you are interested.
Thank you!

Hi Peter,
Just following up to see if you were able to get any of your club members
interested in being a part of our Fall Camporee. As I mentioned Oct 17 is
Jamboree on the Air for Scouts all over the world.
Do you have any members that can bring their ham radios?
Let me know either way as I will need to replace the ham radio event if no
club members can make it.
Thanks
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
Thank you for contacting me regarding your upcoming planned scouting
activity in October of this year. We will be having our monthly meeting
of the St. Mary's County Amateur Radio Association in about 2 weeks and
I will be sure to bring this topic up for discussion with the membership
and see what kind of interest we can generate. I will be back in touch
with you after that meeting with our decision on support.
In the meantime, I'd like to take this opportunity to invite you and any
of the scouts to partake of an excellent opportunity to find out more
about ham radio in the near term. Our club will be participating in the
annual national amateur radio emergency exercises that are held on the
last full weekend of June each year. This year, we will be setting up
at least four amateur radio stations in a public display on Saturday, 27
June in the morning and beginning a 24 hour period of operation at 2 PM
that runs throughout the night. This event, known as "Field Day", will
be set up in the field at the rear of the parking lot of the Hollywood
(Maryland) Volunteer Fire Department in Hollywood, which is on the
southbound side of Maryland Route 235, about a quarter mile north of the
Route 245 traffic light (Hollywood-Leonardtown Road). We will have a
large 30' x 30' tent set up and all equipment will be powered by
emergency generators as part of the exercise. We'd love to have
participation from the scouts to sit down with us and learn about ham
radio from experienced hams in the southern Maryland area. We will have
the traditional voice stations but, this year, will also be operating
modern digital stations with computers along with a satellite station
and other modes of communication. We also will have a fully
computerized wireless LAN logging system to keep records. Amateur Radio
'Field Day' is the most popular annual amateur radio operating event in
the country and involves tens of thousands of ham radio operators around
the country. The air waves will be buzzing with activity throughout the
24 hour operating period and this would provide an outstanding
opportunity for your scouts to learn about ham radio and how it works.
Each year, we have had some local scouts come and sit with us to see how
this all works and we try real hard to get them to get on the air and
talk to other folks all over.
At the public display, we will also have a welcome table with lot's of
literature about ham radio plus continuous movies on large screen
monitors showing various aspects of the hobby. This would be a perfect
opportunity for your hams to come down and focus on ham radio by sitting
down and operating the stations, talking to folks all around the
country. We also have lots of room to pitch tents, etc. in case you
would like to have some of the scouts talk on the radios throughout the
night. We have public restrooms located on-site about 25 feet away from
the tent and a huge parking lot right next to the site. This is a very
safe location and we have been doing this event there for almost ten
years.
Please consider coming down in a couple of weeks and joining us in
having some fun with ham radio! You can learn more about our club by
going to our web site at www.qsl.net/smcara on the Internet. We will
have links on the site to the "Field Day" planning page where you can
get additional information about the schedule, picnic on Saturday at 6
PM, see pictures of last year's field day setup, etc.
This might be a good precursor to your event in October.
I look forward to talking to you soon about the October event and hope,
in the meantime, that you might consider coming down to our Field Day
site on the 27th with some of your scouts to spend some quality time
learning about ham radio!
