The state police barracks in Annapolis is getting ready to close its doors
for good. It's part of the governor's budget to save the state hundreds of
thousands of dollars. But those who've worked out of the barracks say it's a
bad idea that could jeopardize safety.

The Annapolis state police barracks has been serving the public for 16
years. But come this summer, you'll no longer see troopers leaving the
building. Under the plan to close the barrack, the 29 troopers working at
the Annapolis barrack will be relocated to Glen Burnie. A move critics say
is a bad idea.

Lt. Kevin Lambert, retired barrack commander says, "It's going to be a
safety issue not only for the public. It's going to be a safety issue for
the troopers who are going to be working in this area." Former
Superintendent of State Police George Brosan says, "It's the presence in the
state capitol. We have so many things here. The statehouse, Naval Academy,
the courts. the Bay Bridge is not far away."

These men are worried it will slow down response times when critical
emergencies arise in the Annapolis area. But the current superintendent of
state police says consolidating the barracks would eliminate desk jobs and
put more troopers on the street. The Annapolis barrack will be closed before
July first.
