Folks,

We regret to announce the untimely passing of former St. Mary's County
Amateur Radio Association member John Schotanus (WB4YOG), of Clearwater,
Florida. John was 54 years old. He is survived by his wife and son. He
was a very active member of the SMCARA in the early 70's right after he got
out of the Navy and while he was a new employee of Comptek-PRB Associates,
Inc. doing computer support work for the government. John was a computer
enthusiast and one of the first local hams to really appreciate the
importance and power of computers to change our lifestyle. To the best of
my recollection, he also was one of the first hams in southern Maryland to
own Radio Shack's first computer, the TRS-80 microcomputer released in 1977,
and he rapidly became a whiz in programming. One of his early achievements
was to develop a computer program to generate the BCD codes necessary to
remotely control an ICOM IC-22 2-meter FM radio. He parlayed his hobby
abilities into a life-long career in computers and information security
systems with various Defense contractors. He and his wife recently moved to
Florida where he took a senior management position with Lockheed-Martin.
John died of a heart attack earlier this morning (Sunday) while undergoing a
medical procedure for a kidney problem. Our thoughts and sympathies go out
to his wife Judy and family.

  Pete Butt, WA3UMY
  President, SMCARA
