Hi boys and girls
I'm repeating part of Joe's message from earlier because things have
changed and *we need action now*
Joe AJ3X, AJ3X at arrl.net, said earlier:
> The Maryland Senate's Finance Committee will hear testimony from a
> group of Amateurs on January 26 in support of Senate Joint Resolution
> 2, "Radio Amateurs - Commendation and Encouragement". A copy of the
> resolution introduced by Senator Klausmeier can be found at:
http://mlis.state.md.us/2005rs/bills/sj/sj0002f.pdf.
> The committee will vote next week on whether to send it to the Senate
> as a whole. This resolution is the springboard for specific Amateur
> Radio bills that we may wish to introduce in years to come. We need to
> act this week to get the resolution passed in the senate.
> We have to flood our senators with brief correspondence urging them to
> support SJ2. In the General Assembly, constituent mail is more likely
> to be counted than it is to be read in detail. The Finance Committee is
> expected to vote before Feb. 4, and the entire Maryland Senate is
> expected to vote on the resolution soon thereafter. QSL's bearing our
> message should be in the mail to all the senators this week. This is
> the best way to do it, according to the Senator Klausmeier's
> legislative director:
Well, things have changed from the above.
Several of us testified before the Senate Finance Committee today and
presented an overwhelming case in favor of the resolution.
Joe unfortunately had business commitments and was not able to testify.
However, we did our thing, we were received *very* favorably, and the
vote was taken on the spot. This, according to Senator Klausmeier's aide,
has never happened before in his history working with the Senate.
Normally there is discussion, requests for additional research, economic
and financial impact reports, typical government nonsense. Then they come
back later for the vote.
This time, though, they cut through all the above. They voted on the
spot, a very unusual occurrence as mentioned AND --
THEY PASSED THE RESOLUTION UNANIMOUSLY!
And, the resolution very likely will continue to be fast tracked and
could be to the House of Representatives as soon as tomorrow. Most likely
we have a few days, but we don't know.
SO -- we need everyone to squirt QSLs per Joe's instructions below to
both your Senator and three Representatives *now*. No time to lose. Even
though the Finance Committee of the Senate passed it, the entire Senate
should be QSLed just to be safe.
Follow the below and make every effort to get QSLs in the mail soonest.
**PLEASE PASS THIS INFO ALONG TO ANY OTHER REFLECTORS, NETS OR AMATEUR
CIRCLES WITHIN MARYLAND. SOMEONE PLEASE PUT THIS ON CBRA (PAT ...).
We have an excellent chance at knocking down the CC&Rs which plague those
of us trying to exercise our federally regulated hobby. We can't afford
to lose this momentum.
Don't start digging the hole for your new antenna yet, but start thinking
about it.
BELOW IS FROM AJ3X. PLEASE DO IT NOW.
* Write in large letters on the QSL card with a Sharpie or similar
pen, "Please support SJ2." We made a test with a regular pen, and they
couldn't find the message on the QSL. So a bold marker-type pen would be
better.
* It is also OK to write or print the message on a blank white
label and stick that on the face of the card. Don't make them search for
the message.
* In all cases, sign the card, also with the Sharpie or similar
pen.
* If your QSL has a P.O. box instead of a street address, write in
the street address, so they can see that you're a constituent.
* Get your Senator's Annapolis address from this website:
http://mdelect.net/electedofficials
* Put the card in an envelope addressed to the senator. Put your
return street address (not a P.O. box) on the envelope.
* If you don't have a QSL, write a note on a piece of paper or card
as described above and place that in an envelope.

(Steve again)
We will keep you informed via this channel.
The senator wanted her picture taken with the amateurs. When that pix is
forwarded to me I'll pass it along.
Holler if questions.
Credit especially to Joe AJ3X and Tom N3IJ for honchoing this effort. A
few put forth a lot of effort for the benefit of the 10,000 hams in
Maryland.
