On-Ramp to Beltway Will Close Tomorrow
Drivers on Route 210 to Be Redirected
Sunday, October 24, 2004; Page SM06
The entrance ramp from northbound Route 210 (Indian Head Highway) to the
outer loop of the Capital Beltway is scheduled to close tomorrow for about a
year, state and federal transportation agencies involved with the Woodrow
Wilson Bridge project have said.
A traffic shift is scheduled for implementation after tomorrow morning's
rush hour. Maryland State Police will assist with the transition during the
day. The existing ramp from Indian Head Highway to Interstate 295 will
remain open.
Motorists wishing to access the outer loop from Indian Head Highway will
have to use a new ramp located off eastbound Oxon Hill Road (Route 414). To
access this detour, northbound drivers heading for the eastbound Beltway
will:

. Continue traveling an additional half-mile on Route 210, past where they
previously exited.
. Turn right onto eastbound Oxon Hill Road.
. Turn left after about 800 feet onto the new detour ramp to the outer loop
via a signalized left-turn lane. The new ramp is just west of Forest Heights
Baptist Church and across from the Best Western Potomac View hotel.
To help reduce the inconvenience that this detour will place on drivers, the
right-turn lane from Route 210 to Oxon Hill Road has been extended, and a
third continuous lane has been added to northbound Route 210.
The year-long ramp closure is necessary for the reconstruction of the Route
210 and Oxon Hill Road intersection as part of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge
project. The new intersection will be grade separated, with Route 210
becoming a flyover ramp over Oxon Hill Road. During the next year, workers
will begin rebuilding the ramp from Route 210 to the outer loop.
Officials are urging drivers to increase caution and to expect changing
conditions, roadway workers and heavy equipment. All construction-related
road, ramp and lane closures are subject to change, based on weather and
contractor scheduling. Click on www.wilsonbridge.com for the latest
information.
