Folks,

It is with regret that we report the passing of long-time
SMCARA club member Roger Chandler, N3AGJ who died on Saturday,
28 February at St. Mary's Hospital. Roger was 78 years young.

  An accomplished sailor, aviator, and ham radio enthusiast;
Roger was always interested in keeping abreast of new technology
and would happily exhibit the latest 'toy' he had acquired,
whether it be a new GPS for his sailboat, a new scanner or a
new radio for his airplane. Roger loved to sail and equipped
his 42' sailboat with the latest in communications equipment
for open ocean sailing. Roger also was a private pilot with
instrument and instructor ratings, his own airplane and his
own airport at his home in Ridge (how many of you have actually
landed at 'Chandler International')!

In recent years, Roger was very active in community events,
whether it be the CAP, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Power Squadron,
Ham radio, emergency management, or the Corinthian Yacht Club.
He loved politics and even ran for County Commissioner President
a few years back. One of his successes was campaigning to get
the activities of the St. Mary's City Commission scaled back
to protect the environment and rights of private property
owners in the St. Mary's City area.

Roger is survived by his wife Jean, a sister and 3 sons. The
family is planning a spring memorial service.

  Roger... we will miss you!

Vr, Pete (WA3UMY)
President, St. Mary's County Amateur Radio Assn.
