Jesse - I'm Barry, WR3Z, of Lexington Park. I don't own the ICOM rig, but
from my experiences using a 50W 2M rig in my last car, I think you would
still be better off hooking up the power line directly to the car battery
vice the cigarette lighter. If you used the lighter adapter, you wouldn't
be able to operate unless the motor was running. The only thing you would
have to worry about with the battery connect would be stringing the power
line from inside your car through any convenient hole (or drill a hole
through the firewall) to reach the battery.
Numerous places sell cigarette lighter adapters that can be used for HF/VHF
equipment. Sometimes they can be found at Radio Shack. For hams, another
"local" store very ham friendly is RF Connections in Gaithersburg, MD.
Joel, K3RFC, who owns the store is very knowledgeable about things like
this. All you would need to make sure of is having a cig adapter with the
adequate fuse in it to handle the amps!
Also, I can't remember seeing an ICOM case. I bought a Yaesu FT-900 back in
the mid '90s and use a carry-on size suitcase to lug it around (if I were
taking it with me on travel). Some people also buy camera cases that have
the heavy duty styrofoam and resize the holes to fit the radio, mike,
accessories.
Hope this helps. 73, Barry

Subject: [SMCARA] Question about ICOM 706 radio
Dear Amateur Radio Operators,
I own an ICOM 706 MKIIG radio that I bought from HRO last year. I
enjoy this radio very much and have become quite familiar with it. It
sucks alot of power to use to go mobile. Does anyone own this radio or
know someone who does who would be able to answer some questions for me
about it? I would like to use this radio to go mobile sometimes but and
would like to rig it some how so I can hook it into the cigarette
lighter to use. Is this possible if I switch it to low power and if so
how could I do it? Does anyone also know if ICOM or another company
makes a case for it that I can put it in to protect it when I take it
places?
Thank you,
Jesse Small KB3GXV of Waldorf, MD
