Hello folks,

Garner Hayden (W3SI) and I are trying, finally, to get the
mailing list back under some semblance of control. I've added
a few new names to the SMCARA mailing list distribution and, if
you are seeing this for the first time, that's why. If you
don't wish to see any mailings from the SMCARA, please send a
quick e-mail to: [email protected] and I will be happy to
remove your name from the mailing list.

  Ok, now some news...

First, we will NOT be holding a ham club meeting in the month
of September. The Lexington Park library is in the process of
moving to the new location on Shangri La Drive in Lexington Park
(across the street from the Lexington Park Elementary School that
is being renovated). They have cancelled all meetings that were
being scheduled for the months of September and October.

The NEXT MEETING of the SMCARA will be held in October (date TBD
but probably the fourth Thursday). We are working on securing the
conference room at the Naval Aviation T&E museum by gate 1 of the
NAS but haven't confirmed it yet. Tom Clarke (W4OKW) will be hosting
the meeting as I will be on travel that week. They do have a good
program in the works... more details on that in a couple of weeks.

We also have secured the NEW Lexington Park library for our joint
November/December meeting. That meeting will be held on Wednesday,
3 December at 7:30 PM in the Longfellow 'B' conference room at the
library. More details to follow once the library opens, etc.

I am keeping the SMCARA web page updated on a regular basis now
with all the latest news. Please surf on over to that site:

                http://www.qsl.net/smcara

for the latest information on upcoming events, etc.

                    Amateur Radio help needed!

We have been asked by the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory folks
to provide some radio communications assistance in support of the
annual Solomons Island Biathlon to be held this coming Saturday,
September 28th from about 7 AM to 11:30 AM. This is a fun event,
not very stressful or difficult, where we can definitely help the
organizers keep track of about 100-150 bike riders. Basically they
only have two checkpoints: the starting point down at the foot of
the island by the CBL and up at the Calvert Cliffs State Park. We
just need one or two folks at the starting point who can communicate
with a few folks at the Park so the race organizers can keep track
of who got there and who left. There isn't a real need to have any
mobile units unless we have enough folks to help that could do that.
Last year, the bikers made the trip to the Park grounds in record
time (something like 45 minutes or so). They then get off their bikes
at the Park and run through the woods down to the bay and back, then
get on their bikes and ride back to the lab grounds in Solomons.
This race goes fast! I have several folks lined up but we could use
a few more. Please consider spending a couple of hours this coming
Saturday helping out. If you can help us, please call Pete Butt (WA3UMY)
at 301-342-1354 (work #) or 301-862-2214 (home #) or call Dave Moore
(N3YZU) at 301-757-3966 (work #) or 301 481 4679 (home #) and let us
know. If you can't support us the entire time, perhaps you could
help out for an hour or two. Thanks! We appreciate it.
