From colstonl at gmail.com Thu Dec 15 17:49:26 2016 From: colstonl at gmail.com (Lloyd Colston) Date: Thu, 15 Dec 2016 16:49:26 -0600 Subject: [Skywarn] Lightning Training Message-ID: The COMET Program is pleased to announce the publication of the new lesson, "Using NWP Lightning Products in Forecasting" . This 20-minute lesson introduces two lightning hazard NWP products that forecasters can use to monitor convection during a convective meteorological watch and assess lightning risk at Day 2 and beyond. The first product is the Flash Rate Density, a derived, deterministic lightning product implemented in some NCEP high-resolution NWP models. The second product, the SPC Calibrated Thunderstorm Probability, combines forecasts of measurable precipitation and favorable lightning environments determined from the Cloud Physics Thunder Parameter. Information on these products is presented in the context of a case study in which learners determine the potential for lightning to impact a large outdoor event. In the process, they learn how to use the lightning products with traditional near- and nowcast diagnostics such as radar, satellite imagery, and hourly HRRR analyses of convective instability. We welcome any comments or questions about the content, instructional approach, or use of this lesson. Please e-mail them to Bill Bua (Bill.Bua AT noaa.gov). I live in the Ft. Myers FL area on Pine Island just off shore of Cape Coral. I am interested in weather phenomena and Amateur Radio. The SKYWARN program seems to be a good mixture of both. I have just completed the on line SKYWARN Spotter training and am awaiting to be registered and assigned a Spotter ID number. The nearest SKYWARN repeater is at the extreme limit of my northern coverage area. I am active on D-STAR and I participate in the D-STAR South East Weather net. I was wondering if the NWS has or plans to establish a presence on the D-STAR network? Looking forward to participating on the SKYWAR List Serv Regards, David Penney/K4DCB ------------------------------ Message: 3 Date: Wed, 19 Oct 2016 06:08:58 -0500 From: Lloyd Colston To: "skywarn at mailman.qth.net" Subject: [Skywarn] New COMET Update Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 The COMET program is pleased to announce updates to the Operational Models Encyclopedia (https://www.meted.ucar.edu/training_module.php?id=1186). COMET has added an entry describing the Real-Time Mesoscale Analysis/UnRestricted Mesoscale Analysis (RTMA/URMA). The RTMA/URMA is the analysis used to bias correct and weight the elements of the National Blend of Models (NBM) and reflects the August 2016 implementation. Additionally, the RAP/HRRR encyclopedia entry has been revised to reflect updates made to these models during August 2016. The WRF dynamical core was updated to v3.6 and forecast hours for the RAP were increased from 18 to 21 hours and from 15 to 18 hours for the HRRR. Other updates included adding the effect of aerosols on precipitation microphysics, a switch to the RRTMG radiation scheme, improvements to the MYNN planetary boundary layer scheme and the RUC land surface model, and the implementation of the Grell/Frietas convection scheme. The changes overall reduced a warm, dry bias in the RAP and HRRR. Finally, the Encyclopedia now includes direct links to Meteorological Services of Canada (MSC) global and regional model descriptions. The MSC will periodically update these descriptions to reflect the most recent MSC model upgrades.
