Oil and hazardous materials spills along coastlines and in rivers require specific response and clean-up operations. Environmental factors including weather, waves, and tides are critical to these operations. To support the incident response, National Weather Service (NWS) forecasters provide detailed marine forecasts. This lesson is intended to provide marine forecasters with an overview of what happens during a spill and the types of weather and seas information that stakeholders need. The lesson uses the 2014 Texas City "Y" spill in the Galveston Bay to provide examples of a spill timeline as well as effective decision support products for communicating information to responders. The intended audience for Marine Weather Services Incident Response and Decision Support is any operational forecaster who may be tasked with providing briefings or other information to support incident response efforts. This course consists of five self-paced lessons, in four topic areas, 3D Thinking, Vorticity, Deformation Zones, and Conveyor Belts. Each lesson contains forecast-relevant exercises to help users directly apply this knowledge in the office, field, or classroom. These materials are also relevant to students in meteorological dynamics classes allowing them to apply meteorological theory and equations to actual atmospheric examples. The course can be taken in either English or French and required 3-5 hours to complete. ? Please follow this link to enroll in the English course: https://www.meted.ucar.edu/training_course.php?id=44 ?
