Greetings from your broadcast friends out on the Desert...
This is BDR Newsletter 760, Volume 15, #32 for March 6, 2024
Here are some things you might want to know about:
BUSY WEEKEND - DST AND MORE
This is the weekend Daylight Saving Time starts for most of the country (Arizona/Hawaii, hi!). Just remember that at after 1:59AM on Sunday, it will be 3AM. Aside from older gear, daytime/critical hours stations should check their PSA and PSSA authorizations
for ensuring the correct power changes.
Monday will be the deadline to ensure your EAS boxes are updated to the latest FCC and FEMA versions and certificates. Stations that have not done so could be issued an NOV and fined. The big deal is that stations must wait at least 10 seconds to see if an
alert will come through the IPAWS system and run that instead of the audio from the LP1/2, etc.
Byt the way, while we do not yet have a specific date for this years NPT, we do know Canadian stations will have their semi-annual national test on May 8th.
NAB SHOW IS ALMOST HERE
If you have not registered as yet, go to NAB.org Convention hotels are available, and there is a new scheme that links your badge to your monorail ticket purchase. All things considered: ensure you have comfortable shoes!
CAN SPRING BE FAR AHEAD?
Do not ask the folks in Northern California or Nevada, but Puxantawny Phil might have been right: Spring is due in just three weeks, in fact on March 24th. With this in mind, we continue our discussion of Spring Cleaning, with a focus on RF, this week.
On Thursday, Jeff Welton returns and shares his observations. Do you have any special tips or tricks to use in Spring Cleaning? Join us and share!
The day and time are normal: 2 PM Eastern/ 11 AM Pacific. The link request is at
www.theBDR.net/TLG/ ... and you can also subscribe to the youtube video series at youtube.com/thebdrnet ....

TV RULES NOW EFFECTIVE
The September 2023 Report and Order regarding new rules for TV stations is now effective. A number of rules were revised for Class A TV stations, mostly in response to changes from Analog to Digital transmissions.
DIGITAL CLEANUP DAY
March 18th has been designated as Digital Cleanup Day, as an opportunity to go through your systems and get rid of digital waste in an environmental way. Can you declutter your digital footprint? We noted a couple of weeks ago how digital waste is not only
involved in wasted power, but in filling up landfills, etc.
BUT THEN, YOU MIGHT WANT TO GET A NEW "TOY"
We would appreciate hearing if you like the new look for Dana's Daily Deals? Dana has some really nice buys. Now, they are easier to access.
Check them out.

Do You Remember? This week in history:

Also, how about some more regular newsy-type stuff:
...and 148 years ago (3/7/1876) Alexander Graham Bell was granted the first telephone patent for his invention. (Did he invent the busy signal, too?)

* the result: the Motorola C-Quam system really did not satisfy many stations, leading to AM Stereo radio fading away.
** This week it was announced the Malaysian government was sponsoring a new attempt to locate the missing airplane.
*** The Spanish Flu really had nothing to do with Spain. During the years of WWI, wartime censors withheld early reports of illness from the major combatants. Spain - a "neutral" country - was more open, hence the number of reports made it look like Spain was
the "hot spot." Recent reports from scientists hint it might have come from … China!
**** acetylsalicylic acid was originally made from a chemical found in the bark of willow trees.
MIDWEEK BONUS
One of the big things that radio hates is ... silence (S&G's song notwithstanding). Did you know it can drive people crazy? Perhaps not several seconds of silence, but how long could you hold out?
Take a look.

PLEASE INVITE A FRIEND
We sure hope you are finding the BDR and the Newsletter to be of value to you. If so, there are two things that you can do to ensure the BDR keeps pulsing along:
1. Invite a colleague or a friend to sign up for the Newsletter. Since it is only one-time-a-week, you will not be accused of flooding their in-boxes!
2. Anytime you deal with one of our sponsors, letting them know the BDR is important to you will make them happy - and ready to keep on supporting the BDR.
TELL US WHAT'S WHAT
There are so many areas into which we would like to expand, but it is feedback from you that helps us decided where to go first. Are you interested in a certain piece of gear or technology? Let us know. Even better, would you be willing to do a user report
and share your experience?

We sure do appreciate you spending time with our Newsletter. And even more so when you recommend us to your colleagues and friends.

Now ... some extra stuff .. some important ... some just interesting.
MORE DETAIL HERE
Those you who read the Newsletter might notice that more detail is
provided on some timely issues than on the BDR site, itself. That is one
reason we encourage you to invite your friends to subscribe. We are Opt-In
only... and we give you two promises (OK, four!):
(1) no inbox flooding - it is one-time-a-week, and
(2) we do not give out anyone's address.. ever.
(3) no cookies are placed on your computer.
(4) no Google ads are grafted onto your computer screen.
(Need to change your address? No problem. Or, what can we do to make the BDR more useful to you? Just reply and send us a note about what you like, or what you think is missing.)
