Greetings from your broadcast friends out on the Desert...
This is the BDR Newsletter 750, Volume 15, #22 for December 27, 2023
Here are some things you might want to know about:
BRRRRRRR
Oh my goodness! Someone let the white stuff down this week! (Welcome to the official start of Winter 2023 - it was on 12/21).
We hope that it has neither disrupted your travel plans nor caused transmission interruptions. This is definitely the season you do not want an emergency trip to the transmitter. Just a suggestion: when you have the time and no pressure, visit the transmitters
as you can, and ensure all looks well. As you know, for some reason a lonely transmitter finds a way to "call out."
LPFM
The FCC is working its way through the LPFM applications. Appplicants now are awaiting the lists of stand-alones and the mutually exclusives to see how this next phase turns out.
GETTING READY FOR 2024
Meanwhile, all of us are in the final week of 2023. It is a good time to reflect on any paperwork that should be concluded for this year - and start setting goals and deadlines for 2024.
Do you have a checklist of action items?
GOODBYE 2023, HELLO 2024
Our final virtual get-together will center on the what we want to remember from 2023, what we want to forget, and an opportunity to think about the possibilities for 2024. What was the biggest story in broadcasting this year? The worse thing that happened?
What do you want to accomplish in the new year? Join us and share your thoughts. Who knows? Maybe you will get some good ideas and some new ways to get projects underway.
MORE NIPRB LETTERS
Some further NIPRB (Noitce of illegal Priate Broadcasting) letters have gone out from the FCC to landowners in places like Sweet Home, OR, Lake Forest, CA, and Guaynabo, PR.
NO CHANGE
One of the most anticipated things from the FCC this year is the network and TV station ownership limits - a fair part of the long overdue 2018 quadrennial review the FCC has been slow to conclude. The upshot: no real major changes, albeit some tightening
of existing rules, like the Top Four rule, which seeks to keep the TV industry from consolidating away from localism.
ONE APPLE THE TEACHER WILL NOT GET
A patent dispute has disrupted the sale of Apple 9 and Ultra 2 watches. No telling how many are in the supply chain, but this is going to be an annoyance for a lot of folks. Apple is appealing the ruling.
FOR SALE
A retiring contractor has listed several items, including test gear and a couple of Optimods, this week. These and other items are
available, as always, here. Of course, as we hit the end of the year, you might find some bargaining points on some items.
Also, now that the big holiday is over,
Dana's Deals will certainly have some special buys listed.

MANUFACTURERS' NEWS
Are you having trouble getting through to customer support this week? While it is not always easy to relax when you are off the air, most manufacturers are watching the phone lines and will respond as quickly as they can during a holiday week. On the other
hand, this might be the time to suggest having an "auxiliary transmitter" to the boss!

Do You Remember? This week in history:
Broadcast related items:
... and some more generally newsy-type items:
... and 133 years ago (12/29/1890), in the final chapter of America's long, unfortunate Indian wars, the U.S. Cavalry killed 146 Sioux at Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota.

WEEKEND BONUS
Have we gone too far with everyone reviewing everything? (No, I'm not asking you to review the BDR - at least not here!) Our current culture, with its nose in their cellphones, may have reached a nadir. Take a look at these reviews of national parks - it
is almost as though taking their eyes away from the cellphones was a big imposition. Has modern Society reached its end?
Outdoor Magazine offers up a few of the worst reviews they have seen.

PLEASE INVITE A FRIEND
We sure hope you are finding the BDR and the Newsletter to be of value to you. If so, there are two things that you can do to ensure the BDR keeps pulsing along:
1. Invite a colleague or a friend to sign up for the Newsletter. Since it is only one-time-a-week, you will not be accused of flooding their in-boxes!
2. Anytime you deal with one of our sponsors, letting them know the BDR is important to you will make them happy - and ready to keep on supporting the BDR.
TELL US WHAT'S WHAT
There are so many areas into which we would like to expand, but it is feedback from you that helps us decided where to go first. Are you interested in a certain piece of gear or technology? Let us know. Even better, would you be willing to do a user report
and share your experience?

We sure do appreciate you spending time with our Newsletter. And even more so when you recommend us to your colleagues and friends.

Now ... some extra stuff .. some important ... some just interesting.
MORE DETAIL HERE
Those you who read the Newsletter might notice that more detail is
provided on some timely issues than on the BDR site, itself. That is one
reason we encourage you to invite your friends to subscribe. We are Opt-In
only... and we give you two promises (OK, four!):
(1) no inbox flooding - it is one-time-a-week, and
(2) we do not give out anyone's address.. ever.
(3) no cookies are placed on your computer.
(4) no Google ads are grafted onto your computer screen.
(Need to change your address? No problem. Or, what can we do to make the BDR more useful to you? Just reply and send us a note about what you like, or what you think is missing.)
