Greetings from your broadcast friends out on the Desert...
This is the BDR Newsletter 748, Volume 15, #20 for December 13, 2023

Here are some things you might want to know about:

LPFM WINDOW STUCK OPEN
Have you ever had a window that would not quite shut? The FCC found that it could not close the LPFM Window today, apparently due to some possible issues with the LMS server, which caused difficulties in making filings. Also, there were reports that some filings were visible to viewing by unauthorized persons. in an abundance of caution, the FCC extended the Window until Friday the 15th. The freeze on translator minor change applications is also extended, to December 18th.

PASSWORDS GOOD AND BAD
Last week hackers broke into a water system in the Pittsburgh area. Federal and State officials seem to blame a weak or default password as the mechanism used.

Implementing good passwords has always been a difficult quest for many companies. Curt "Cowboy" Flick has been preaching about the need to use good passwords for several decades now. His article may give you some useful ideas on how get the job done right.

THE BEST AUDIO PATH
This week Clark Novak and Robbie Green from the Telos Alliance will join us for a discussion of the best ways to get audio from the Control Room to the Transmitter. Solutions will be presented, and questions answered.

Come join us! We will be at the usual time/place: 2 PM Eastern on Thursday / 11 AM Pacific time. We will be on zoom and youtube live. Information on the link is at www.theBDR.net/TLG/

Tuesday Reminder: If you would like a reminder each week of what our main topic (we do "network" afterward, by the way), just let me know, and I'll add you to the Reminder List.

AI PUSHES ALONG
A lot has been said and written about AI and how it is being used. And experts say it is going to be even more prevalent in the near future. One area that especially may impact broadcasters is using AI to craft news stories. The current scandal at Sports Illustrated, where a number of articles have been written by AI, is worth noting. SI's parent, The Arena Group, has now dismissed the CEO, joining at least three other high profile dismissals last week.

EMAIL CHURN
According to one report, as much as 30% of email database "churn" each year. If your address changes, for whatever reason, let us know, so you do not miss any of our newsletters. If you know of a colleague whose email has changed, let them know we are still here: www.theBDR.net/newsletter/

REPAIRS
Perhaps you have an older Optimod (like the 8100, 8100-XT, or 9100) that just does not sounds as sharp as it used to sounds. Check out these folks; they can go through, recap, and re-align your processor to sound as good as new.

END OF YEAR SLOWDOWN
Speaking repairs: if you are planning a purchase - or just need parts and/or support - remember that many companies largely shut down the last two weeks of the year. Their folks want time off, too!

FOR SALE - WANTED
Among the newer postings, an RCA 77DX and a Shure SM-5B. Also, there is a person seeking a dehydrator, and another seeking used Optimods. Check these and other opportunities here.

* Dylan had to deliver a required speech to get the 8 Million Kroner (almost $1 Million) prize.

** The scene where Igor (Marty Feldman) tells Dr. Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) to "walk this way," really caught their attention and, returning to the studio, titled the track on which they were working.

*** These three songs held (with a minor change) for three weeks:
        1) "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye,
        2) "Love Child" by The Supremes, and
        3) "For Once In My Life" by Stevie Wonder

**** The Marvelettes.

*****  Audio Fidelity Records founder Sidney Frey had Westrex engineers cut a disk for release before any of the major record labels could do so. (Side 1 featured the Dukes of Dixieland, and Side 2 featured railroad and other sound effects designed to engage and envelop the listener.)

****** There are those who feel this was more reception of storm noise than actually an "S."

WEEKEND BONUS

OK ... so perhaps you were like me and did not recognize 99 out of last week's 100 "best songs" from 2023. They were not on my personal list.

On the other hand, did your hear about the "Color of the Year?" Yeah ... according to Pantone, it is Peach Fuzz, described as "contemporary, velvety, and nurturing." If you want to see if it makes you feel that way, click here.

PLEASE INVITE A FRIEND
We sure hope you are finding the BDR and the Newsletter to be of value to you. If so, there are two things that you can do to ensure the BDR keeps pulsing along:
        1. Invite a colleague or a friend to sign up for the Newsletter. Since it is only one-time-a-week, you will not be accused of flooding their in-boxes!
        2. Anytime you deal with one of our sponsors, letting them know the BDR is important to you will make them happy - and ready to keep on supporting the BDR.

TELL US WHAT'S WHAT
There are so many areas into which we would like to expand, but it is feedback from you that helps us decided where to go first. Are you interested in a certain piece of gear or technology? Let us know. Even better, would you be willing to do a user report and share your experience?

We sure do appreciate you spending time with our Newsletter. And even more so
when you recommend us to your colleagues and friends.
