Greetings from your broadcast friends out on the Desert...
This is the BDR Newsletter 743, Volume 15, #15 for November 8, 2023
Here are some things you might want to know about:
SAGE ANNOUNCES ANOTHER DELAY
Sage Alerting notified the FCC and users this week that they will not have their update ready on time to meet compliance as of December 12th.
Stations should not be worried at this time, the Rules do allow for non-compliant operation for 60 days, so long as entry is made in the Station Log.
NRSC, ANYONE?
As we approach the end of the year, it is time to remind everyone that an NRSC measurement must be done by each AM station every year. If you have not gotten yours done as yet, this is the time!
Here are some folks that can do it for you.
THE MANY PATHS TO AIR
The path may be as short as a couple of feet or 40 or 50 miles. The STL - Studio to Transmitter Link - may take many forms. Special guest Chris Crump from Comrex will be with us for our discussion, including a survey of the dozen and a half options, and
how to choose the best one. We invite you to share your tips and tricks on how to make this link work. What have you learned to avoid, and what have you found to be best.
Even after we drop back to Standard Time, we will met as usual - except in Arizona and Hawaii:
Thursday at 2 PM Eastern/11 AM Pacific. Get your link at
www.theBDR.net/TLG/ or reply here or go to youtube.com/thebdrnet for the live program and more.
JACK SELLMEYER PASSES AWAY
Few engineers in the industry have accomplished as much as Jack Sellmeyer did. Not only did he design allocations and build stations, but he also did design work on exciters, transmitters, audio consoles, and more.
An overview of Jack's accomplishments is here.
SENATOR WANTS TO BASE EV CREDIT ON AM RADIO
A lot of people got $7,500 tax credits for buying electric vehicles. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has indicated his desire to stop the tax credits unless the vehicles have AM radios in them.
And then, there is a real issue: RFI.
RADIO LISTENING GROWS, AT LEAST ON THE ROAD
Regardless of tax credits, recent surveys indicate listening to AM and FM radio has increased and has hit an eight-year high as more workers return to their offices and endure the local traffic. The Edison Research reported American worked an average of
4.9 days a week in the office. At least it does seem like good news for radio.
ATSC-3 CONVERTER NOW OUT
Pearl TV has noted that
a new NextGen TV converter is now available for about $90. The set-top box is from ADTH.
THE ALERT THAT WAS NOT
Many residents in Iowa were told to boll water and breast feed.
It was not real as station KGLI noted on their facebook page.
THE ALERT THEY WISH WAS NOT
In California, the "Shake Alert" test scheduled for 10:19 AM on October 19th went awry. A whole bunch of cell phones went off -
but not at 10:19 AM.

PLEASE INVITE A FRIEND
We sure hope you are finding the BDR and the Newsletter to be of value to you. If so, there are two things that you can do to ensure the BDR keeps pulsing along:
1. Invite a colleague or a friend to sign up for the Newsletter. Since it is only one-time-a-week, you will not be accused of flooding their in-boxes!
2. Anytime you deal with one of our sponsors, letting them know the BDR is important to you will make them happy - and ready to keep on supporting the BDR.
TELL US WHAT'S WHAT
There are so many areas into which we would like to expand, but it is feedback from you that helps us decided where to go first. Are you interested in a certain piece of gear or technology? Let us know. Even better, would you be willing to do a user report
and share your experience?

We sure do appreciate you spending time with our Newsletter. And even more so when you recommend us to your colleagues and friends.

Now ... some extra stuff .. some important ... some just interesting.
MORE DETAIL HERE
Those you who read the Newsletter might notice that more detail is
provided on some timely issues than on the BDR site, itself. That is one
reason we encourage you to invite your friends to subscribe. We are Opt-In
only... and we give you two promises (OK, four!):
(1) no inbox flooding - it is one-time-a-week, and
(2) we do not give out anyone's address.. ever.
(3) no cookies are placed on your computer.
(4) no Google ads are grafted onto your computer screen.
(Need to change your address? No problem. Or, what can we do to make the BDR more useful to you? Just reply and send us a note about what you like, or what you think is missing.)
