Greetings from your broadcast friends out on the Desert...
This is the BDR Newsletter Volume 14, #27 for February 1, 2023
Here are some things you might want to know about:
AND FCC SERVERS ARE STILL AN ISSUE
We are hearing reports that server access is improving, but the FCC has again adjusted the deadline for the Q4 I&P upload to February 28th. Best access seems to be early in the morning and later at night.
RAY TOPP PASSES AWAY
We are saddened to report Ray Topp passed away suddenly early in January. Ray was a station owner from Minnesota who transitioned to print for the past 40 years, starting with the Rochester Radio Guide and leading to the Radio Shopper. Ray asked me to be
his Editor in 2002, and we had a good time revamping Radio Guide Magazine together, even eventually sponsoring the Radio Guide AM Transmission Seminar as a way to extend the format of bringing needed information to the folks in the field. The BDR is an outgrowth
of our years at Radio Guide, and is a constant "tip of the hat" to Ray's pioneering. Ray's passing will be noticed by many, as Radio Guide has ceased publication.
OJT
The mission at Radio Guide, to help folks "learn things" to help them better their work capabilities and experience. In this vein, our Thursday Virtual Gathering will discuss on the job education on the various options for learning things. Jeff Welton will
be along and share some of the things he's learned, and we'll see what you think. Our Zoom and YouTube gathering is tomorrow (Thursday) at 2 PM Eastern/11 AM Pacific. The link, as well as a list of previous videos is available at
www.theBDR.net/TLG/. And, for those of you who can, would you help us hit a goal of 1000 subscribers to
the channel? You do not have to sign up for the auto-notifications, unless you wish to get them, but subscribing will help us all.
HELP!
As you can imagine, with the end of Radio Guide, it is more important than ever for us to reach out to folks who do not currently get the BDR - and this especially applies to those who are new to the industry or IT folk who need to know more about broadcast
operations. Can you help us by recommending the BDR to your colleagues and friends? As you know, the BDR Newsletter comes out each week, but we are constantly adding articles and other information. Similarly, the professional mailing lists at
www.radiolists.net is a good place to get answers and learn about what is going on.
WHAT SHOULD NOT GO ON
The FCC is pretty clear: Section 11.45 says that EAS tones should not be used for anything but emergencies and system tests. Using it in a promotional piece is definitely going to get
a pretty strong negative response from the Commission. In this latest case, Fox Corporation will be paying $504k into the US Treasury. Does your staff know not to do anything like this?
CHICKEN AND EGG?
No, this is not about the price of eggs. According to industry analysts ATSC3 is suffering from insufficient broadcasts - and - not enough receivers as yet. Data indicates only 8% of new TVs are ATSC3 ready.
DO YOU STREAM?
It is not just a matter of setting up and feeding a stream.
David Bialik talks about things to which you need to pay attention.
END OF AN ERA
For those in the air transport industry, the final Boeing 747 - a cargo version - is being delivered to Atlas Air today. First built in 1968 it carried its first passengers for Pan American Airlines on January 22, 1970, hence a 55 year production schedule
comes to a conclusion. The 777X is the next generation to take to the air, but those of us who remember the humpbacked 747, and the comfort if brought to passengers with its two aisle configuration will miss seeing them.
FOR SALE
As usual we have some new items for sale this week, including some Bird elements for sale, and someone needs a PA module for a Harris Z3.5, someone else wants a McMartin FM transmitter 3-5kW. Catch these and other items on
the Buy/Sell/Trade page.

WE HOPE YOU SHARE WITH A FRIEND
We sure hope you are finding the BDR and the Newsletter to be of value to you. If so, there are two things that you can do to ensure the BDR keeps pulsing along:
1. Invite a colleague or a friend to sign up for the Newsletter. Since it is only one-time-a-week, you will not be accused of flooding their in-boxes!
2. Anytime you deal with one of our sponsors, letting them know the BDR is important to you will make them happy - and ready to keep on supporting the BDR.
PLEASE TELL US WHAT'S WHAT
There are so many areas into which we would like to expand, but it is feedback from you that helps us decided where to go first. Are you interested in a certain piece of gear or technology? Let us know. Even better, would you be willing to do a user report
and share your experience? Just reply to this email... we will help you through it!
- - -
We sure do appreciate you spending time with our Newsletter. And even more so
when you recommend us to your colleagues and friends.

reason we encourage you to
invite your friends to subscribe. We are Opt-In
only... and we give you two promises (OK, four!):
(1) no inbox flooding - it is one-time-a-week, and
(2) we do not give out anyone's address.. ever.
(3) no cookies are placed on your computer.
(4) no Google ads are grafted onto your computer screen.
(Need to change your address? No problem. Or, what can we do to make the BDR more useful to you? Just reply to this Newsletter and send us a note about what you like, or what you think is missing.)
