Here is an information piece about Mestaa’ëhehe (Owl Woman) with a link to pronunciation (roughly Miss-taa-eh).
The image at the top is by George Curtis Lewis, a well-known Native American modern ledger artist.
There is also a link to a Rocky Mountain PBS report on the renaming event that highlights the significance to the Native American community, especially Native
American women.
I find Mestaa’ëhehe’s story inspiring. Her marriage to William Bent created an alliance and space of peace between the Native peoples and the European settlers
in the 1830s-1840s. She was the communication bridge between communities. Today, the mountain that now bears her name is all about communications.
I am using the abbreviation “Mestaeh” or “Mestaaeh” in my radios that support 16-character names, though I suspect I’ll shorten it further for radios with smaller
field limits.
I do not know what the Morse equivalent is for accented letters, especially the “overdot e”.
