This is BDR Newsletter 827, Volume 16, #47 for June 18, 2025

Here are some things you might want to know about:

AND HERE COMES SUMMER!
We are just three days from the official start of Summer, and already in many parts of the country, the weather is starting to show it! Not only are temperatures up, but we've already had enough storms and tornados to say "enough!" Unfortunately, KTXS, Sweetwater-Abilene TX lost its 199-foot tower<https://www.thebdr.net/current-news-items/>- and most of its studio building<https://ktxs.com/news/big-country/officials-call-ktxs-news-station-dangerous-after-severe-storm-damage> in a severe thunderstorm on Sunday - during a weather report.

FILING DEADLINES
As the second quarter of 2025 comes to an end, it will soon be time for the Issues & Programs filing to be done. At the same time, there is another quarterly report that the FCC expects: the Quarterly Tower Lighting System Inspection. The inspection includes the lights and the system that turns them on and off. (Of course, if you do not have lights on your tower, there is no worry.) But, did you know, in addition to the normal inspection, there is a requirement to check the lens integrity every two years? Cracked or broken lens could lead to system failure if not caught and corrected.

TRANSMITTER INNOVATION
Over recent decades, broadcast transmitters have gotten more powerful, smaller, and more reliable. Manufacturers continue to enhance overall performance with features that improve efficiency and lower cost of operation - things that may drive your decision to get one of the newer models? Broadcast Electronics (BE) has come up with some interesting innovations that you will want to know about, even if you are not ready to purchase a new unit.

BACK TO 2-1
The Senate voted 53-45 to confirm Olivia Trusty, restoring the Republican majority and quorum for Chairman Carr in time for next week's FCC Open Meeting (the 26th). There are still two seats empty, and awaiting President Trump's nominations.

MORE THINGS TO CHECK
It is not just the periodic Lighting System inspection that needs to be on your list. Have you checked the fence(s) around your tower(s)? True, the FCC only discusses AM site fences. But, perhaps you read about the man who climbed up the WAMU/WTOP tower, before jumping to his death.<https://www.thebdr.net/current-news-items/>

SITE SECURITY IS IMPERATIVE
These days, more than ever, you need to know what is happening at your tower site. It is not only weather than can take a station off the air. Vandalism and accidents happen. One station in Memphis has been off the air for a month<https://www.thebdr.net/current-news-items/> and the costs of repair continue to grow. Another station, WRDT, in Monroe, MI, lost one of its towers to a farmer, who clipped a guy wire.

ATTRITION
A recent survey found that four in ten under 30 years of age do not watch "regular" TV on an average day. Older viewers are more likely to watch some TV, but 28% no longer do. And AM station numbers are down some 8%, year over year. Causes are attributed to a number of things, like streaming - now at some 45% of TV consumption - but income attrition affecting both TV and radio is potentially coming in the form of a Senate Bill that would place a ban on prescription drug ads. Public broadcasting is not exempt from income attrition: The House Rules Committee cleared a rescission Bill that would claw back $1.1 billion from public broadcasting, including all funding for the CPB.

PRIME DAY(S)

Lawo recently participated in a unique event - the Waltz into Space - celebrating both the 200th birthday of the "Waltz King" Johann Stauss and the 50th anniversary of the European Space Agency (ESA). On May 31st, using the Lawo mc²36 MkII a performance of the Strauss' iconic Blue Danube Waltz was sent from Vienna's Museum of Applied Arts into space - transmitted towards Voyager 1, now 15 billion miles from Earth.
