Greetings all, see my email below about something heard on another states repeater linked system..

MAY WE NEVER DO THIS HERE ON SKYHUBLINK!

Remember we are all AMATEUR RADIO OPERATORS. Lets us operate in the manner of the AMATEURS CODE of ETHICS and OPERATION.

Subject: Heard on your repeater system

Greetings (name callsign withheld) from a fellow system administrator operator in Colorado!

I wanted to bring something to your attention that one our Skyhublink operators heard while passing through Oregon and heard on your system. It was frankly disturbing to hear and I was aghast when it was reported to me.

Evidently, a couple of very young hams, operating properly with ID’s and all good amateur operating practice, at least according to the story I heard, were essentially told that the repeater system was not there for kids to use and to take their communications elsewhere.

Frankly, this SOUNDS anyway like a serious breach of all that is Amateur Radio. The Amateur Operators Code states, in part anyway:

Key Principles of the Radio Amateur's Code:

  *   Considerate:
Never intentionally operate in a way that diminishes the enjoyment of others.

  *   Loyal:
Offer loyalty, encouragement, and support to fellow amateurs and local clubs.

 Here at SKYHUBLINK we try to operate in a way that encourages NEW and YOUNG hams to have all the communications they can, utilizing the system for learning, good amateur practice, growing in the hobby, and are ALWAYS WELCOME. It is reported to me that the system out there is every quiet overall, and that folks communicating for common everyday should be a good thing. That is the example we, as older & more experienced “Elmers”, I believe anyway, should be setting for the younger folks, who in todays world of the internet, cell phones and social media, should be welcomed with open arms and Mics! 😊

Our system is of course, and has been utilized for everything from Scouting Nets to any and all emergency traffic, to being there just for common everyday ragchews and general amateur communications. We are not a “closed” to any traffic system. If a system operates that way, in my opinion, then we are NOT operating Amateur Radio. That is what commercial two way or other avenues of radio communications are for.

Now, who am I to admonish, really no one, but I have seen systems go this way and am disheartened when us older, more experienced, seasoned, are not promoting amateur radio in the manner prescribed by what amateur radio really is. At SkyHubLink we try to set a different example.

Just wanted to report this to you and let you do with it what you will. I am not sure who or when this example occurred on your system, but I thought you might want to be aware of the fact that someone on your system is SERIOUSLY causing harm to the literal, in my opinion, future generations that could be welcomed into the hobby and our wonderful privilege, not “right” to operate Amateur Radio! We should ADMONISH all operators to operate well and by GOOD AMATEUR PRACTICE in ALL things!

FOR THE BETTERMENT of this GRAND HOBBY SIR!
