Greetings from your broadcast friends out on the Desert...
This is the BDR Newsletter 755, Volume 15, #27 for January 31, 2024
Here are some things you might want to know about:
DASDEC UPDATE AVAILABLE
Starting April 14, 2024, EAS users will install a new certificate to receive <https://www.thebdr.net/latest-eas-news> IPAWS CAP alerts<https://www.thebdr.net/latest-eas-news>. Without the update, the weekly tests and alerts sent through the FEMA system will not be received by stations. This is <https://www.digitalalertsystems.com/alerting-authorities-digital-certs> a free update for all U.S. DASDEC and One-Net users<https://www.digitalalertsystems.com/alerting-authorities-digital-certs>, and the new certificate is fully functional right now, so you are advised to replace the current certificate to ensure the required message authentication continues to operate correctly.
SPRING CLEANING TIME!
OK, so we are merely on the cusp of February (not Febyuwary - personal peeve), but the snow will melt before too long and we get a chance to take a close look at our facilities. And, not only are there tasks to complete, but it is time review what we hope to get done this year, before schedules of tower crews, NRSC measure services, etc, are filled up.
Yep - first Thursday of the month - first day of the month! - we welcome our buddy Jeff Welton back to discuss the things we can do to maximize site efficiency, even if we end up with six more weeks of white stuff.
Want to join us and see what tips you might not have considered as yet? We get together on Thursday at 2 PM EST/ 11 AM PST. The link is available through the page at www.theBDR.net/TLG/<http://www.thebdr.net/TLG/> (We will also be on youtube live - please subscribe to thebdrnet channel.) The more friends you invite to our zoom meeting - or youtube live broadcast - the more voices will be heard and the more we will all learn.
FCC VS PIRATES
The FCC has issued a report on the status of its efforts to increase personnel and locating more illegal radio broadcasters, finding the properties where they originate and warning property owners under the PIRATE Act (Preventing Illegal Radio Abuse Through Enforcement). The EB has identified a number of illegal stations, some operating for years.
A FINE FINE?
The FCC' efforts under The PIRATE Act to locate and crack down on pirate broadcasters most recently came to sweep the area around Miami, Florida, where over $3.5 <https://www.thebdr.net/nal-watch-fcc-enforcement/> million in fines<https://www.thebdr.net/nal-watch-fcc-enforcement/> are being sought. Most eye-popping: the maximum - $2,391,097 - issued to one person who had been cited at least twice before in the past 10 years.
DIRS REPORTS
The FCC had adopted new rules that voice, cable., and Internet providers report their status each day the DIRS (Disaster Information Reporting System) is activated. Broadcasters are currently exempt, but the Commission is considering an NPRM (PS Docket No. 21-346<https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DOC-399583A1.pdf>) to require the reports which are now voluntary (only 1/5 to 1/3 of stations in affected areas usually participate). The NAB suggests this is not going to work easily, especially for small stations - or any place where the Internet goes down.
In case you would like to see DIRS in action, there will be a "mock emergency" from Feb 6th - 8th. Participation is opt-in, if you are interested, contact: michael.caiafa at fcc.gov<mailto:michael.caiafa at fcc.gov>, john.healy at fcc.gov<mailto:john.healy at fcc.gov>, or ryan.hedgpeth at fcc.gov<mailto:ryan.hedgpeth at fcc.gov> by February 2nd (This Friday!)
AM RADIO SUPPORT
Although they have studies showing less than 5% of car owners now use AM, Ford has announced they will put AM Radios back in some 2023 vehicles with a software update. Meanwhile, a NJ Congressman, Josh Gottheimer has announced an effort to require "warning stickers" on vehicles without AM radios in them: "Warning: No AM Radio. Vehicle Unsafe in Certain Emergencies."
... AND YET ...
there has been little effort by most manufacturers or agencies to reduce/eliminate the RFI generated by some EVs and some large trucks. And ... what about LED stoplights? More than a few commentators suggest it is too late for AM to be saved.
PAY RADIO
Now in bankruptcy, Audicy has floated plans to market subscription radio.

You likely have read about how Japan was the fifth and latest country to put a vehicle on the Moon. However, at first the "Moon Sniper" did not seem to work, with the power running out. The Japanese scientists finally figured out why the solar panels did not work. Fortunately, like almost a miracle, nine days later<https://www.livescience.com/space/the-moon/japans-moon-sniper-resurrected-nearly-9-days-after-losing-power-thanks-to-solar-charge>, it got enough power to set right.

PLEASE INVITE A FRIEND
We sure hope you are finding the BDR and the Newsletter to be of value to you. If so, there are two things that you can do to ensure the BDR keeps pulsing along:
1. Invite a colleague or a friend to sign up for the Newsletter. Since it is only one-time-a-week, you will not be accused of flooding their in-boxes!
2. Anytime you deal with one of our sponsors, letting them know the BDR is important to you will make them happy - and ready to keep on supporting the BDR.
TELL US WHAT'S WHAT
There are so many areas into which we would like to expand, but it is feedback from you that helps us decided where to go first. Are you interested in a certain piece of gear or technology? Let us know. Even better, would you be willing to do a user report and share your experience?
- - -
We sure do appreciate you spending time with our Newsletter. And even more so when you recommend us to your colleagues and friends.

Now ... some extra stuff .. some important ... some just interesting.
MORE DETAIL HERE
Those you who read the Newsletter might notice that more detail is
provided on some timely issues than on the BDR site, itself. That is one
reason we encourage you to invite your friends to subscribe<www.theBDR.htm>. We are Opt-In
only... and we give you two promises (OK, four!):
(1) no inbox flooding - it is one-time-a-week, and
(2) we do not give out anyone's address.. ever.
(3) no cookies are placed on your computer.
(4) no Google ads are grafted onto your computer screen.
(Need to change your address? No problem. Or, what can we do to make the BDR more useful to you? Just reply and send us a note about what you like, or what you think is missing.)
