Greetings from your broadcast friends out on the Desert...
This is the BDR Newsletter 745, Volume 15, #17 for November 22, 2023

Here are some things you might want to know about:

TURKEY WEEK
Yep, it is now the 45th anniversary of what some regard as the most famous episode of WKRP. (And you thought we were going to talk about tomorrow's menu!) But that was not the only gaff, real or fictional, in broadcast history. This week, while you are preparing, eating, or otherwise considering the big bird, we will serve up our regular Thursday Virtual Lunch Gathering. A slice of WKRP will be accompanied by the discussion Donna Halper and I had regarding things broadcasters think is history, but are not.

So, take a break from everything and join us tomorrow at 2PM Eastern / 11 AM Pacific. Invite the whole family to enjoy the turkey promotion (actually no turkeys were shown nor harmed in making the episode) and historical discussion. IS IT NAB TIME ALREADY?
Yes, it is still November. But the NAB has opened registration<https://registration.experientevent.com/ShowNAB241/> for the 2024 Spring NAB Show in Las Vegas, starting on Saturday April 13 (Exhibits open on Sunday) to Wednesday the 17th. We expect the usual Free Floor Pass codes will circulate shortly. Stay tuned!

PAPERWORK
The Biennial Ownership Reports and the 13 GHz confirmations are due next week. You did file Form Three for the NPT on the ETRS this week, right? If not, do it now!

WHEN YOU DO NOT PAY THE FCC ...
In March, Bravo Broadcasting was warned the FCC had run out of patience waiting for them to pay the Regulatory Fees. With apparently no response, the Commission took the next step<https://www.thebdr.net/nal-watch-fcc-enforcement/>, and not a good one for KIRT. A "D" is involved.

BUT IF THERE IS NO TOWER?
It is hard to operate without an antenna. After Snake River Radio bought KPCQ, Chubbock ID, the towers were destroyed<https://www.thebdr.net/current-news-items/>.

On the other hand, 92.7FM in Abuja, Nigeria may well get on the air eventually - if they can find their tower<https://www.thebdr.net/current-news-items/>. Apparently, it was taken by suspects said to be officials of a state agency.

HISTORY IN PICTURES
Two of the more popular pages on oldradio.com archives are the Hardware page, with pictures and stories of broadcast transmitters, studio consoles, etc<https://oldradio.com/archives/hardware/>. The other was intended to be a summary of broadcasting in many markets, along with history and some transmitter site tours<https://oldradio.com/archives/stations/> (WLW, KRLA, KFI, etc...)

Unfortunately, the BDR has left me with not much time to update those pages and add pictures. So, I am going to ask you: if you - or a friend - have any pictures we are missing - or historical insight - please share! The same goes if you might be willing to help update the city pages, especially with personal memories. Just send it in a reply to this email.  And ... in harmony with the season ... allow me to you my thanks in advance!

MORE NEWSPAPERS CLOSING
According to a Northwestern University study, the demise of newspapers is accelerating, with 2.5 closing each week in 2023. True, most are weekly papers, but that leaves radio and TV as the only other sources for local news and information.

LOCAL NEWS MAY HELP BROADCASTERS
It may seem a bit like a return to the 60s: there is a proposal from FCC Chairwoman Rosenworcel suggesting the FCC make it easier to renew licenses or transfer stations based on the amount of their production of local content of news and information.

On another FCC issue: There will be an NPRM to end "junk fees" that are added to cable and satellite TV service bills.

STREAMING AUDIO GUIDELINES
This past week the NRSC committee published a report over 110 pages, defining terms and detailing suggested "best practices."
