Greetings from your broadcast friends out on the Desert...
This is the BDR Newsletter 742, Volume 15, #14 for November 1, 2023

Here are some things you might want to know about:

IT'S TIME TO FIX THE TIME
Just checking: in the US, this Sunday is the day to roll back the clocks, say goodbye to Daylight Saving Time, and grab that extra hour of sleep - or for the overnight crew, repeat the 1AM hour. (Europe has already "reset") Do you have any gear that needs to be reset for Standard Time? Does traffic have that extra hour of programming ready? Of course, those of us in Arizona or Hawaii do not need to do anything but grin.

PUTTING THE 2023 NPT TO BED
Many have already filed Form Three on the ETRS, to report to the FCC how the NPT worked in your area. If you have not done so, the deadline for filing is November 20th.

WINTERIZING TIPS AND TRICKS
As the changing colors in many places remind us, Winter is coming. So, *this* is the time to get things ready for what is ahead - especially the influx of the homeless seeking to move in - not just people, but critters, reptiles, etc.

Preventing these invaders is part of seasonal maintenance that needs attention from the desert to the mountains. We need to winterize the equipment, check safety precautions and protocols, and more. Each site may have a different list, but Jeff Welton, who has seen sites North and South, will be with us to help discuss ways to make a site more weather resistant and able to survive what weather is sent out way.

When: Thursday at 2 PM Eastern/11 AM Pacific. Get your link at www.theBDR.net/TLG/<http://www.thebdr.net/TLG/> or reply here or go to youtube.com/thebdrnet for the live program and more.

2024 CALENDAR
The special 2024 Broadcast History calendar that John Schneider has prepared is still available. Just click here.<http://theradiohistorian.org/pubs.html>

NO NATIONAL PANIC
Society has certainly changed since the Orson Welles "War of the Worlds" broadcast 85 years ago. With so many more media, it is hard to suppose a fake report or program could cause panic. Then again, we see the turmoil around the world over the past couple of weeks based on some "news" reports. One thing: there was no general panic in 1938. Contemporary news reports are strangely silent on what was supposed to be a national panic. Still, it is not a bad reminder to ensure air staff avoid hoaxes. Anyone remember KIKX?

CAVELL, MERTZ MERGES WITH CAPITOL AIRSPACE
After 34 years of serving the broadcast community, Cavell Mertz & Associates has merged intoaviation consulting firm Capitol Airspace Group, LLC. Gary Cavell continues as Senior Director of the Spectrum Division, which will add communications interference studies and analysis to its existing portfolio. The fccinfo.com site will continue to be available with some new features planned.

EEO TIME
The FCC has released another round of EEO audits. To see if your station has been selected, just click here.<https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DA-23-994A1.pdf>

SAVING AM RADIO
With all the interest in saving AM radio, some information on getting the best from your RF system is welcome. Ron Schacht gives some tips on making it all sound better.<https://thebdr.net/category/site-operations/>

NOW AND THEN
That is the title of the Beatles final song, to be released tomorrow. Completed using AI<https://www.msn.com/en-us/music/news/the-last-beatles-song-now-and-then-finally-arrives-after-more-than-40-years/ar-AA1iT0Kz>, it is as if the Four Boys from Liverpool finally got together for a reunion. The music video was done by Peter Jackson. It will be everywhere.

DO YOU USE 13 GHZ?

* Yes, years before Prince changed his name to that unpronounceable icon, the lead singer for the Mysterians took the name "?"

** Now follow this: He's a Rebel, written by Gene Pitney for the Shirelles (who declined to record it) was actually recorded by the Blossoms - but credited to the Crytals - so Phil Spector could beat Vickie Carr's version to the market. The Crystals were said to be quite surprised to learn they had a hit record they had nothing to do with!

*** UCLA student Charley Kline attempted to transmit the text "login" to a computer at the Stanford Research Institute over the first link on the ARPANET, which was the precursor to the modern Internet - but the system crashed after the letters "l" and "o" were sent, making "lo" the first message ever sent on what was to become the Internet.

**** Built with laminated birch and spruce (hence the nickname the Spruce Goose) the massive wingspan was longer than a football field.

PLEASE INVITE A FRIEND
We sure hope you are finding the BDR and the Newsletter to be of value to you. If so, there are two things that you can do to ensure the BDR keeps pulsing along:
        1. Invite a colleague or a friend to sign up for the Newsletter. Since it is only one-time-a-week, you will not be accused of flooding their in-boxes!
        2. Anytime you deal with one of our sponsors, letting them know the BDR is important to you will make them happy - and ready to keep on supporting the BDR.

TELL US WHAT'S WHAT
There are so many areas into which we would like to expand, but it is feedback from you that helps us decided where to go first. Are you interested in a certain piece of gear or technology? Let us know. Even better, would you be willing to do a user report and share your experience?

- - -

We sure do appreciate you spending time with our Newsletter. And even more so when you recommend us to your colleagues and friends.

Now ... some extra stuff .. some important ... some just interesting.

MORE DETAIL HERE
Those you who read the Newsletter might notice that more detail is
provided on some timely issues than on the BDR site, itself. That is one
reason we encourage you to invite your friends to subscribe<www.theBDR.htm>. We are Opt-In
only... and we give you two promises (OK, four!):
(1) no inbox flooding - it is one-time-a-week, and
(2) we do not give out anyone's address.. ever.
(3) no cookies are placed on your computer.
(4) no Google ads are grafted onto your computer screen.

(Need to change your address? No problem. Or, what can we do to make the BDR more useful to you? Just reply and send us a note about what you like, or what you think is missing.)
