NET NEUTRALITY
As expected the newly "full" FCC has voted to start the process of changing common-carrier regulations, giving itself authority to regulate broadband access under Title II communications services. This is not the place to debate the issue - there are arguments on both sides. But, those who want to provide input to the FCC will soon have an opportunity. (Already the NCTA has made its position of opposition clear.)

SHURE SM MICROPHONES OLD AND NEW

We have been discussing a lot recently relating to microphones and mic processing - learning about the reasons behind the designs and applications of the microphones from the various manufacturers. Among the leaders, Shure is approaching its 100th anniversary. One of it most popular models has been out of production for years, yet the company is still working to provide the pleasing "sound" for which it is famous.

For broadcasters it is the SM series ... particularly the SM 5 and 7 models that are found in many top studios. This week Michael Pettersen from Shure returns with a look at these models, their evolution, and the newest editions to the line, including the brand new SM-7dB. You are sure to find it interesting, and will learn things about this line.

THE LPFM WINDOW HAS BEEN MOVED INTO DECEMBER
To repeat from last week: the FCC has been more accommodating than usual and has rescheduled the LPFM Window that was originally set for November 1st. The Window will now run from December 6 to 13<https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DA-23-984A1.pdf>, with the freeze on existing LPFM and FM Translators to remind in effect until December 13th.

FROM RED TO WHITE
What in the world is going on? Last week we had the hottest October day in history - 101, and today, the NW is covered in snow, with the midwest on watch. Why mention this? It is a good time - perhaps a bit late in some areas - to get your sites "winterized."  There is a list of things that should be done - and maybe you have a thought or two. Next week, that will be our focus - and Jeff will talk about it on Thursday.

FALLING BACK
A timely reminder: Most of you will need to readjust your clocks next week. Daylight Saving Time ends on November 5 at 2AM. Actually, at the top of the hour, it will be true deja vu: right after 1:59:59 comes 1:00:00 (except in Arizona and Hawaii - we welcome the rest of you coming "back in sync" - at least until March!). It is time to review any gear that needs special attention at time change, and add that extra hour to the overnight programming.

COUNTING THE DAYS
Once you get past the DST to regular time zone change, perhaps you might be interested in a special 2024 calendar from John Schneider. Using some historic pictures (usually colorized to make them stand out), this calendar also notes key dates in broadcast history. Want one? Just go here.

ATSC HITS THE BIG APPLE
Just in time for the NAB Fall TV Show, ATSC 3.0 NextGen broadcasts have been initiated in New York City. While some Patent issues have caused at least one manufacturer to pull back, proponents are hoping the new tech will catch on with viewers as the televisions in our living rooms tighten the relationship between over-the-air stations, streamers, and Internet sources.
