[The Broadcasters' Desktop Resource ... edited by Barry Mishkind - the Eclectic Engineer]
Greetings from your broadcast friends out on the Desert...
This is the BDR Newsletter Volume 14, #28 for February 8, 2023
Here are some things you might want to know about:
NAB IS COMING INTO SIGHT
Can it be? Just 10 weeks to NAB? A lot of folks are working hard to get things ready for this year's Spring Show. If the attendance at CES was an indication, NAB should have a good turnout.
According to the NAB, the West Hall will be christened the "Broadcast District." It will be interesting to see how that turns out, especially in terms of the balance between radio and TV and streaming.
One concern where broadcasters will be seeking answers is regarding auto dashboards. We have heard a lot about how manufacturers are divvying up space, even eliminating AM radios. One the other hand, Genesis says that their new EV vehicles will have AM.
FCC AIMING AT BIGGER FINES?
The recent FCC fine of $504k for three seconds of EAS tones seems to indicate a harder line is coming. Warnings about Online Public Information Files hints that more fines are coming. And the top end has gone up! Mostly it is really due to inflation, but the FCC is pushing the numbers to now around $116,000 per single violation - and as much as $2.3 million total. No more cheap speeding tickets!
IF YOU OWE IT, PAY IT!
The FCC does not fool around. If you do not pay the regulatory fees due, it will put you on "red light" status. That means you will not get actions on applications, including license renewal, and may even actually lose the license itself, as DWEKC (yes, the D stands for "Deleted") most recently did.
CYBER SECURITY
There were big outages this week at a major network distribution center. The full story of the cause has not been released, but it was clear some stations had to resort to Plan B to get programming.
WHEN AND WHY YOU SHOULD CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD
It seems that the reports are constant: "hackers got xxxx records from company XX." Should you be concerned about these data breaches? Take a look at the reasoning behind When and Why You Should Consider Changing Your Passwords.
