Colorado Severe Weather Watch Net Coming to SkyHub Link System

We're excited to announce that the Colorado Severe Weather Watch net is coming to the SkyHubLink System. The Colorado Severe Weather Watch Net is dedicated to the discussion, forecasting and nowcasting of severe weather across Colorado and beyond. We believe in using all amateur radio modes to promote and enhance Amateur Radio Emergency Communications through the use of operating standards and both analog and digital amateur radio technology during severe weather and other natural disaster emergencies.

We experience many types of extreme weather: blizzards, tornadoes, destructive hail, microbursts, non-thunderstorm damaging wind events, floods, wildfires, droughts and heatwaves. The SkyHub system will activate the Colorado Severe Weather Watch net whenever significant severe weather threatens counties anywhere in the state of Colorado. You're most likely to hear activity during tornado season, though significant large-scale winter storms may also warrant net activation. Activations are designed to collect, analyze and traffic the fastest possible, real-time severe weather information while furthering the understanding of severe weather phenomena to those monitoring the net.

"We're excited to partner with the SkyHub system as it will bring a much greater coverage area across Colorado and further enhance public safety during times of dangerous weather," says Matt Kaskavitch, K0LWC. Matt has a long history as an active storm chaser across the plains. He's been conducting amateur radio nets across the plains every year for more than thirteen years on radio systems from Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Colorado.

"Matt's vast experience in radar interpretation greatly increased our weather awareness in Eastern Nebraska and Western Iowa," says Dan McGlone, KB0TDW, member of the WB0YLA repeater system near Omaha, Nebraska. "During the 12 years Matt has been active on our system, he's predicted severe weather criteria numerous times before NWS even issued a warning helping to save lives and protect property for those monitoring. Colorado will get that same valuable benefit" he added.

Colorado Severe Weather Watch Nets can be informal nets or directed nets. Directed nets are only used in the most significant severe weather situations.

All amateur radio operators across Colorado are encouraged to participate when the net is activated.

We will also be looking for other interested people who might like to serve as NET controls during such activations.  Stand by for more announcements and information.  This is part of what SkyHubLink was designed to do.  To be a system that can benefit during an actual emergency, health and welfare, traffic and road situational events, weather warnings and situations that warrant.  We will be sending out the actual agreement and an operational explanation to the SkyHubLink email list later.

Any groups or repeaters that wish to be disconnected from SHL of course are welcome to do so during such activations.  Of course not all connected systems will be effected during such activations.  Look for more details coming soon.
