Thanks for the nice reply, Dick! I, like you, have been a long-time member of the SJRA. I joined the club in around 1965 when I was first licensed and I too was mentored by the many smart fellers of the club - mostly RCA engineers.
I also made a career in radio communications and that is the result of the 1960's, 70's, 80's FCC licensing process and the outstanding teaching, tutoring, and mentoring of SJRA members.
My crack was directed at the absurd FCC test learning process - at least what I have experienced here on the east coast. My hat is off to you for teaching the technical and regulatory material on which the various license exams are
based. Here, unfortunately, I find that the "study material" consists of equipment catalogs and test questions/answers are simply memorized. The result is an influx of many new hams that lack the basic knowledge of the rules, regulations, and elementary theory that can be successfully developed into quality operating practice. I believe that many drop out soon after licensing because they simply never learn or grasp the undeniable, unavoidable fascination with the basic science of wireless communications.
73 and I'll look for you in the contest pileups, OM

> The content has enough preposterous misinformation in it that if it was published on April 1st., no newly licensed ham could mistake it as being anything other than a joke. I have tested over one thousand license applicants as an ARRL and W5YI Volunteer Examiner, and administered tests one-on-one to U. S. military personnel overseas under FCC jurisdiction before the Volunteer Examiner program was conceived. And as the "Resident Elmer" of my local club here in California, I would never impede the learning ability of new hams.
> For years I have published an absurd April Fools story that our local clubs have enjoyed by turning it into a group game by adding more and more fun stuff to it. This leads to real technical discussions on our open internet club forums and our open repeaters for several days afterwards; during which we all learn something........both new and veteran hams.
> I didn't realize that this SJRA-Members site was not a spontaneous open discussion forum and that submissions such as mine require approval before they are released to the general membership. I will not repeat my mistake.
> There is much I don't know about the SJRA, it's members, and it's policies. I rejoined The South Jersey Radio Association two years ago to support the club that was so instrumental in my becoming a ham, and in guiding me into a career in radio communications that has been immensely rewarding. I was mentored as a young boy by your members, and was ushered by those club members into my first jobs in electronics. I have not been to a meeting in over sixty years, but have bragged many times to many hams how proud I am of this club and that I was a member in the 1950's.
> As an avid contester, I always feel good when I see K2AA at the top of the standings. I would love to be able to add my results to your contest totals, but because I live in northern California it is not allowed.
> Every year on Field Day, though, I work you on CW and SSB from my club station to contribute a few points.

Because of heavy usage during the recent contest season, certain segments of the band have been sagging under the load, and those wavelengths have started to stretch from the weight. These will be tightened up. The 40 and 80 meter bands will also be closed for maintenance to find and remove some of the debris left behind by QSO disruptors using foul language.
> > Dick Gaul - K2GMY, an avid contester, has noticed that the space between LSB (lower sideband) and USB (upper sideband) is not being utilized. He has developed a mode called MSB (middle sideband). That will also be tested on these bands today only. If you hear him, he will send you a special QSL card. If you hear him testing on all three bands, he will send you a free commemorative QSL cup.
