Hi,
This Wednesday evening (5/18) I’ll be demonstrating ham radio to a group of Cub Scouts in Mt Holly. The first part of the demo will be a focus on “be prepared” (the Boy Scout motto), but then I’m hoping to get them all on the repeater for some quick conversations so they get a feel for our hobby.
I’d like to ask some fellow SJRA members if they could be monitoring the 145.29 repeater on Wednesday night from about 7:00 PM until 8:30-ish and jump in to talk with the Scouts. The boys probably won’t be on until a bit after 7, but I’ll probably run a radio check just to make sure everything is working. Before they get on the air I’m going to show my solar powered station, talk about operating on the trail while backpacking (I did almost two hundred miles of backpacking in 2014), etc. Rolling in connections to Boy Scouts will hopefully keep them enthused to continue in Scouting as well as maybe taking up an interest in ham radio.
These are Cub Scouts, so they’re roughly 7 to 10 years old… a perfect time to get them hooked on ham radio! Be prepared for basic conversations, nothing too in-depth. They might just say their name and hand the mic to the next guy, but maybe a few of them will really be excited and want to talk. Maybe you can get them to talk about what grade they’re in, favorite classes, hobbies, TV shows or video games.
I’ll be using my call… K2UT.
Thanks in advance for your support.
73,
Bob - K2UT
